Last evening drove the kids out on the 4 wheeler to see a new set of twins.  The 4 year old girl and the seven year old boy sitting behind me.  After seeing the two black calves, the following dialogue occurs...they didn't know that I could hear them, as we were moving...:

4 year old girl..."How come that yellow cow had black babies?"

7 year old boy..."Because we put an egg up her butt."

4 yr old:  "Why did you do that?"

7 yr. old:  "So she could have another cow's calf."

4 yr. old:  "Why can't she have her own?"

7:  "Because she needs to have a black calf."

4:  "Why?"

7:  ""Because black calves sell better than yellow ones."

:)

Blunt and too the point, however the "knowledgable" one didn't know enough to read the tag and see that she didn't stick to her embryo...he just thinks he's smart beyond his years!  I would've like to heard him explain the dilutor gene if the calves had been grey!

Sometimes I think that our world would be a lot better off if we had a bunch of kids in charge!!
It is very relaxing when my daughter and I can just walk through the herd and watch the baby's wondering what they will look like by fall.

lol  that's great!!!    (clapping)

couple weeks ago, we were running the cows through the chute and pulling cdirs...i normally try to keep my little girl "distracted" when we are doing "non conventional" things to the cows...so anyway, she happened to slip by me and see her daddy pull the cdir out of one of them...you should have heard the scream!..."daddy!!!!  why are you pulling sammy's bones out her butt???"  she started crying and it went downhill real fast...took awhile to convince her that wasnt a bone and it didnt hurt them and they werent going to die.... :-\
i was finally able to convince her that "bone" was just a "thing" that helped the cow to get pregnant and have babies...she finally settled down and seemed to accept that answer, for now......

kids say and think the darndest things

My oldest is kind of a master of eloquent comments....

As a 4 year old, he also called our new vet "that butt guy" for a year, after watching him preg check cows one weekend....
why do you call him that?  "Because he was sticking his arm up their butt...."

Tres calls them exactly like he sees them!

You have to love the things they say.  We'd lutalysed a bunch of cows and put the estroalert patches on them one day while the kids were at school.  That evening when we were feeding, the 5 year old piped up and said, I see we have cows in heat.  I was looking for activity and asked her why she said that, she said with that tone only used by a 5 year old when an adult does not get it..  "Well they get those square things on their butt when they come in heat"    Ok.. I get it now.  Wonder what she'll say when they trigger.

A couple years ago, she was convinced that we were taking her bucket calf to be flushed...  he was a steer and a typical knot head bucket calf at that.  Even the day he went to the sale barn, she said, Yoda is going to be flushed.

There have been other gems over the years with all the kids - like why do cows jump on each other..  because the one in front is going to slow and that makes her hurry up.  And, when asked our then preschooler how she could identify the bulls so quickly - they are the ones with little purses underneath.  We still tease our 14 year old about.    We went out to the chute one day after they had knife cut a bunch of steer calves and she was busy picking up all the 'barbie hats', oops..  fed the other parts to the dog, didn't think about those.
