This is a heifer I was watching over for a friend I have taken care of this heifer many times! and had a connection with the poor girl she went into labor around 3 this evening she wasnt near enough dilated she kept pushing and had the sack half out when we definetly noticed there was a problem we called the vet out he was an hour away and off call so by the time he got there it was a race just to save momma(miley)he gets there breaks her water right away and chains/pulls the calf here are some pics...realy bad luck lately this is the fourth one for our school (all the same person my best friend) we lost one it was too big and pulled that calf. Lost a heifer and a calf the mom fell over dead while in labor and the calf was dead now this one this baby calf was at least 100 pounds is what the vet said it was a bull calf.

The Cow was let out in pasture she was given some meds to help pass the afterbirth she was also given some antibitics she was bleeding quite a bit so she may be torn but the vet said she isnt torn up too bad. When she was bought she was 3 months pregnant and nobody knows who she was bred to( I know pretty stupid!)but two where bought from the same people and obviosly the bull was big cause the other we lost both calf and momma so it definetly was the bull he has to have something to do with it, sadly we are now done with heifers at the school and only steers wil be raised for now on.

Sorry to hear about the calf.  Been there, done that & it's always extremely hard to tell the other party.  Hang in there, because like justme said, it's just something that happens & I also know that you did your very best.  In the end, knowing that you did your best is all that really matters.  Hope the cow is OK, but judging from the pics (her standing), it looks like she is.

Brittney- nothing you did wrong. Looks like a problem that anyone there would have had. So sorry that it happened on your watch!

It's not your fault. I was told once if you don't have something go wrong with your cattle every once in a while you either don't enough cows or you haven't been in the business long enough.

Brittney, first of all this was not @ all your fault. Many of us on this board can see by the looks of the calf that he was not in the heifer too long B4 you decided to make the call and if he was, he was dead awhile B4 birth. I can tell those 2 things by the lack of swelling in the tongue so give yourself a break. It happens to all of us more than we would like to think, and more to us nutty club calf propagators.
What kind of upsets me about this deal is the statement about no more bred heifers here in your program. I would venture a guess that the chapter has learnt more from the real losses this calving spring than anything Else that they have done with their beef projects. These were real life with real consequences, why not teach on from these experiences, for example, mating choices, BW, BW epds, CE epds, CED epds, cows verses heifers as far as economics are concerned. JMO. I know that the school needs to watch the bottom line, but teaching is suppose at the fore front.

It does sorta suck, last night alone I learned tons the vet explained alot to me. But weve lost 4 now up there and one over the summer gave the school a bad look alot of "unwanted" people came around and it was a mess,I think  its more than that  its just too much more one instructor to handle both steers and heifers

Brittney, I glad that you did get a chance to learn from this and as far as the PPL coming around, they need a good shot of reality also. Things don't always work out the way that we wish  they could.
This is not going to be a popular thought, but I call BS on dropping the bred program. I think that it is more work than the instructor had planned, but I don't like giving up when the going gets tough. I like to get up and try again. There's more @ stake here than what is on the surface. It's life, dig in , reload, and get it done, only adjust and try not to make the same mistakes.  We all have bad days and failures. There's nothing wrong with failure unless we learn nothing from them. Again Brittney, I think that you did an awesome job on your watch and thank goodness that it was your watch. It could have been worse. I am very proud of you and your maturity level. Brent
