So my daughters school is having a talent show instead of a play this year. Will she wanted to sing in it. I told her that would be fine to try out. Well just found out that they will not be awarding a winner. They are just having a show. My question is what is so wrong with making these kids winners and losers? Does losing not make a person try harder or practise a little more for next time. Also the school district they are in will not award a Valedictorian. I hate that they treat all kids with kit gloves and worry about hurting someones feelings. I am so glad I have my kids in 4-H so they and see what winning and losing feels like and work for the better. Frostie(just needed to vent a little)

because the later they find out there are winners and losers, the less they are able to handle it, and the easier it is for the government to reinforce dependency.

really, what they are doing, is weaning kids when the are 25 or 30, or worse, never, instead of 18.

you should advocate for two talent contests.  one for losers only (the one that exists now), and one for winners and losers.  that way, everyone is happy, even though some won't know it till later that are in the winner and losers contest.

Our state 4-H tried to do the "participation" ribbon thing a few years ago. Everyone, INCLUDING the kids, protested so much they ordered the real blue, red, white ribbons by fair time.

My theory, and of course it means NOTHING since I don't have kids according to some, is that if kids can't strive to be first, or blue ribbon, their is no incentive for them to try.
Wait, the no loser thing  gives the parents an "out" so THEIR kid, which got their drive and "want to" from their parents, isn't the loser, which in turn makes the parents the loser (in their mind).
I will use the ol' arguement that the loser parents are the ones that don't want winners and losers. Their kid, which could care less about winner OR losing, probably doesn't care enough to state their opinion either way.

I say, Crown the winner. Encourage the losers, and to the heck with the parents.

I was going to say, 4-H isn't immune to that same type of logic, Iowa extension tried to push that through just a few years ago and it still pops up every once in a while

I sure hope it never comes to that!  Losing in 4-H (I've done my fair share) can be the best lesson 4-H teaches!  Handle the loss graciously, learn from it and seek the answers to your questions to help you work harder and succeed the next time!

that is similaur to our school.  We not longer have a Homecoming King and Queen. It hurts feelings. Every other school around still has one. Community thinks we should. But for prom we have a prom king and queen.  Makes no sense to me.  Our princable is a book smart doctor and dosent like tech ed or ag classes. i personal think he has more than one problem

Do not blame your PRINCIPLE ( lets just call it a typo), have your student council approach your school board. Have parents go for support. Have a student and teacher petition.
Take a leadership role and work for change!

actually it's principal.  I always have to stop and think about this one.  nearly as hard as "effect" and "affect".  ???

Use principal whenever you mean most important. And remember that the word principle is a noun meaning rule or standard. ... Examples of Principal and Principle ... ; After the bell rang, the students gathered in the auditorium to hear the principal speak about President Lincoln and the principle of leadership.

We were always taught that there is a PAL in Principal.    ;)  No idea how to clarify affect & effect.
