Hey folks, figured I'd check in. We've had a week from hell up here, to put it mildly. I'm in the Southwest corner of North Dakota, so we're getting hit with everything right now.

Starting last week Friday, we got up into the 50's, so our 4 feet of snow started to really melt down. I found out the hard way that you shouldn't build your corrals higher than your house. It was fun explaining to the wife why the water running through our lawn was brown. By Sunday a majority of the snow was gone, we had creeks going over their banks, and the dams were overflowing.

Monday mother nature decided that we had had enough of the good life. They were forecasting between 10-24 inches of snow for our area. I left work at 3:30 in a sleet/hail storm that dropped around an inch of ice on teh roads. Barely got home, had time to throw a newborn in the barn, and walked outside and the storm broke. We ended up with around 12 inches of snow that night with 40mph winds. At best the snow was 12 inches deep, with a couple drifts that literally covered buildings, fences, and our hay pile. Like JIT, I thought we might be able to sneak through the year with our hay supply. As of right now we have enough to last us until Saturday.
Tuesday and Wednesday the entire state of North Dakota was shut down. In my part of the state it took 2 days to dig out from the blizzard. 100 miles to the east in Bismarck, they were battling the Missouri River flooding, and then got hit with the same blizzard on top of it. Even farther, Fargo and Grand Forks are fighting with the Red River flooding, and if you go 100 miles west of my house to the ND/MT border, they're still in a drought and haven't gotten a drop of snow to this point.

To top things off, we're under another blizzard warning for tomorrow and Monday, another 8-14 inches is expected. If we still have snow on the ground on April 15th, we'll officially have gone 6 months with snow on the ground up here. So far calving is still plugging along though and we're about half way through with only losing 1 calf. Not to shabby really!

At this stage, I'm expecting the Red River to turn to blood and a plague of locusts or frogs to start dropping on us. I'm a little concerned sicne I'm the first born in our family :)

Thought I'd break this off from the Texas Panhandle post. I've gotten a few PM's and emails asking if I was surviving up here...

A friend of mine just sent me these pictures. It's from the flood close to Fargo. The rancher who owns the cattle apparently lost nearly 100 head to the water. These cattle were lucky enough to climb up the haystack that was there. What you're seeing was a haystack that was 3 bales high. The picture was taken on Tuesday or Wednesday. Not sure if the cows are still there, or what the status is.

Bless you folks. Sorry to hear of your struggles. I have some nephews up that way. They said in one area there were 85 head of dead cattle that floated down the middle of town.

Hey klintdog, I tip my hat to you and all your Dakata commrades. I have watched the TV coverage and it is amazing how you folks are pulling together. Working for the greater good and I hear not one word of "wheres the government?"
It is truly amazing how midwest folks/country folks all band together in times of need. Maybe the ol'Lousisanna folks could learn something from you guys.... oh, I forgot....they are still holding up signs wondering where the gov't is.

My thoughts are with you guys up north. Hang in there!!

I have been informed that the disaster was far worse in Lousinanna....and that there is no comparison.... your right.
Those folks in the Dakotas know how to get off their duffs and help themselves and their neighbors...yep, no comparison.
They have been preparing for this disaster for since it was forcast....yep again no comparison.
I see people assisting those in need....yep no comparision there either.
I do not see Nike shoes or big screen TV's being stolen from stores.....yep, no comparison.
I guess your right, there is no comparison.

Hang in there all you Dakotians!!! You are making us (at least me!) all proud by your resiliance and your generoustity in tough times. Sandbagging for days at a time....wow, I am in awe.

If you can, post more pics....those were absolutely amazing!!

I wasn't going to do this in the open forum but since you INSIST. It seems most all your post lately have had a negative spin. I gave you negative Karma because what you said had NO bearing on the story the person posted. And quiet frankly am tired of your negative attitude.I wish them God's speed, you had to put some negative comment in about New Orleans which has NOTHING to do with ND. WHAT I SAID THEY ARE STILL DIGGING OUT. YOU WEREN"T THERE and YOU CAN"T COMMENT. It must be nice to live in that glass house.

A disaster is a disaster anyway you want to look at it. When is the last time you traveled somewhere to help people in a disaster. Some of us in the medical community went immediately when 911 occurred. I hate to see people sit back and BLOW there mouth when they have never set foot in New Orleans to see the disaster or help out. But you seem to be real good at doing that lately, shooting your mouth off without really knowing the whole story. I do not take kindly to people TWISTING my words. I never once said New ORleans is worse.

Do'nt try and twist my words Show Heifer, be glad you have a community that did come together and help clean up. SO instead of complaiing and making rude uninformed comments about NEw Orleans- how about offering some solutions. This is why you make yourself a target so many times.
I wouldn't wish ill will on ANYONE no matter the situation! I think if you follow my post I usually try to look at things in a positive manner and BE SOLUTION oriented. Most of us can see what is wrong but how about "How can we make it right?"

I don't know who peed in Mother Nature's Cheerio's, but she sure has it out for us today! We're getting hit with another blizzard right now here. In the last 3 hours we've gotten 6 inches of snow with more 30mph wind. Final forecast is for 8-14 inches of snow by tomorrow morning. I was going to go take some pictures, but all it would show is a big white blur. My wife's grandmother passed away in the middle of the blizzard on Wednesday, funeral is supposed to be tomorrow, we'll see how that works out.

As much as these disasters have really torn things up, I think it's done a lot to bring our state together. People from across the state have banded together to help out everyone in need. I have a burning to try and get to Fargo and help sand bag, but the interstates haven't really allowed it.

I'm really sorry for the bad luck you all are having with the floods and for the death in Klintdog's family - prayers are with you all still. Heard some folks here in GA lost their home to a flash flood yesterday - we got about 8 inches

Did the flooding start by snow melting too fast or rain to go along with it?  I didn't get to follow the initial start of the flooding.

I remember having a case study in college on flooding of the Red River in ND back when I was in school in the early 90s.

It seems like its all or nothing no matter where anyone lives.  We still can't buy a drop of water.  Our stock tanks are running out fast.  We've got two pastures we may have to pull out of.
