we have  twenty cows AI'd to calve starting the end of febuary thru march. three of them are first calf hiefers. two of the hiefers have recently aborted thier calves. all of the cows were vacinated in the fall. we have been feeding cornstalks and water grass hay and supplementing with Moormans protien/mineral block with rumensin. some of the hay is a little moldy from the edge of the stack but most is not too bad. the cows seem to be in pretty good shape. any ideas on what might cause the two heifers to abort? hopefully there are not any more.

Did you vaccinate with a modified live vaccine?  Did they have mod live vacs as calves?  When long after the vacs did they abort?  Just a few more questions before we can give you some possibilities...

i will have to check on the vaccine, but i don't think it was a modified live vaccine. they were vaccinated in the fall, approx. five months back.

Have the heifers been with the cows all the time?  How are you feeding them, bale feeder, bunk, spread on ground in row?  We think sometimes they get bashed by another cow that sets them off.  Make sure they have plenty of room to eat.  Hopefully it's just bad luck, but check vaccines given and if it was me, I would contact my veterinarian for advice.  Hope everthing turns out well!

yes we do spread the feed in a row on the ground. we try to givethem plenty of room but them getting knocked around is a real possibility. the vaccine they were given was a seven way for vibrio, lepto etc.(the bacterial stuff). we did not vaciinate the cows for the viral stuff(bvr, bvd, pnuemonia etc,) as our vet said that it usually isn't necessary for the cows. we do vaccinate the calves for the viral.I did talk to the vet and he felt like with our vaccination program, and the cows being healthy that it is probably just bad luck. And that heifers will just do that sometimes, also by the time we got the results from the necropsy, vaccinatedthe cows and gave them time to build an immunity, they would all have passed their due date for calving. I guess we will just pray that the rest will come on time
