Our steer has developed a grayish white crusty buildup on various parts of his body. I was leaning towards ring worm but wanted help for a positive i.d. and a solution. Here's a pic of the hock area. Thanks!

Seems low on the body for lice, but I would start by treating for lice.

It's a type of fungus, but I dont really consider it ringworm.  I get it on out show steers bellies every once in a while .  Use Shapley's MTG on it. You can find it at Tractor Supply.

I also think its lice. This is the time lice come out and make the steers scratch, itch, and rub holes in themselves. We use Cylence pour on insecticide for it. It eliminates both biting and sucking lice.

Whats the weather been like at your place? Are you washing and blowing right now? How often? I don't think it is lice, usually don't get crusty skin with lice. Never hurts to pour again though. I would say more of a rain rot, hot spot issue. I agree with the MTG. It covers a few different issues.

We live in Central Florida so the weather has fairly warm. We wash once a week usually with main n tail but recently have been using an iodine shampoo. We rinse him daily and usually blow him dry.

I have seen an inside leg that looked the same.  The one I saw was a fungus from not getting the inside leg completely dry.

This.  We get a case of this once in awhile, mostly on the belly, twist, and inside of the back legs. Another kid in our chapter had one that ended up with it everywhere - that one didn't get shown.

Usually we can get rid of it by scrubbing it out eventually, and rinsing it daily with vinegar.  Used Sullivan's Double Dip on the last one, it seemed to help, but will sure try the MTG.

It may have something to do with moisture, but at least in our case(s), it's definitely not from washing/rinsing them and then not getting them dry (or rinsed, or not getting something washed out good) because it invariably shows up around this time of year on one we haven't touched since September (and never had anything but show sheen in them even then).  We can have another calf in the same pen, and several more penned next to them in the exact same conditions, but only one gets it.  I've never seen it on anything but a show calf. For us it's always been a market steer, never a prospect or heifer, but that could be a coincidence.
