Hello so my kids are in their second year of 4-h and was wondering how much beet pulp to give the calf’s we have 2 steers and 2 hieffers. (One steer needed help to add depth in his hind end 🤦‍♀️) they are all around the 700 lbs they get 10 lbs 2x day of masterfeeds accelerated which is 12.5 crude but was told we should be using beet pulp but I’m not sure how much and what to do other then wetting it and mixing it in. Any help is very much appreciated I’m new to this and want the kids to have good cows this year sons steer fell behind as we didn’t know all the right things to be doing. Thanks in advance for any help and tricks.

I'm much more of a Purina Pre-con fan then beet pulp. 15-30% Pre-Con of the total ration will add spring of rib as well as depth of body. It has a lot more punch and goody (corn stalks) in it which the calf can utilize. I'm old school enough to have feed hundreds if not thousands of tons of beet pulp. So if that's what you want to feed pulp just add water to 1-2 pounds of dry shreds or pellets the feeding before and add till you get a moist consistent mix. You don't want your pulp to soupy nor to dry something if you squeez it moisture will come out. I only feed wet pulp during hot spring/summer months and dry shreds during the colder months. Any time you change or mix things up rule of thumb is slow and steady. There's really no wrong way to feed pulp just get your mix so the cattle will eat it and keep close track of their gain. One other product that we love here is Ultra Full 70-90 days out from your end target will add depth of flank. One thing with this product is it takes time so be patient and give it time. Hope this helps.

So our 4-h show isn’t till July 1st would you still start the beet pulp now as a stready fibre intake to help out or is it something I should be waiting a bit to  introduce to the calves?

Start now. It will expand that belly which will result in more feed intake. The bigger the belly the more they eat thus the better they gain. Good luck

Find it much easier to add that extra body appearance if started when they are young and developing instead bof waiting till they are full grown

I agree with the Precon thing.  The only time we ever fed beet pulp is if we had one that wasn't eating very well.  It was kind of a last effort to just try something different to get one to eat.
