We have been buying bred heifers to build our herd. Some times they turn out well and sometimes they don't. Have been thinking that buying older cows 4 to 6 years old may be a better way to go. What is every ones opinion or personal experiences?

Thanks

Raise your hand if you ever sold a good cow in her prime?

Most people only buy cows from "true" dispersals and I am talking commercial herds here.  Few people ever let go of good cows and I cannot argue for it.

Most cowmen I talk with have their best overall luck with heifers in the long run.

My advice, buy the heifers that come in with working clothes on, not the 1300lb+ heifers that someone overfed so they looked prettier in the sale ring

Depends on your budget.  A 5 year old cow that has produced three high quality (i.e., high selling/high value) calves from different bulls makes a pretty safe purchase.  But - these come at a significant cost.  Of course, a thorough knowledge base of the cow in question is also important - more money does not automatically equate to more quality.  But, the authentic proven ones will cost you plenty.

Good heifers from known quality cows are also expensive, but in my opinion for the money you might get lucky and get a great cow at a bargain price.  The one thing I think you do not do is buy older cows that have produced average calves and expect something different in the future.  The better gamble is on the heifer.
