Its that time of year again for us. The kids have to have their steers picked by December 7th when we have Weigh Day. Our boys pick from what we have, we don't buy our 4-H projects. My niece picked a steer from our pen again as well, so there are 3 steers going to the fair in July. The pictures aren't great and the steers aren't showy but they are thick. Would love to hear thoughts and opinions.  :)  Care to see if you can place them in the right order?  ;)

The steers are all 1/2 shorthorn from the same sire. The last picture is of the heifer my son pick as a project for this year. She is not a show heifer but I think she'll make a good cow. This year we did not give our oldest any advice he had to pick his own animals. He picked the black steer. My 8 year old picked the red steer (mainly because he is very quiet) and my neice picked the yellow/white one.

Looks like a good start to the show season! Feed 'em good and have the kids work them plenty and they will be something y'all will be proud of in the end.  O0 I'd recommend beat pulp or dearth charge to try and lower the flank or if u don't want to spend the money, give them all the hay they want at night. Good luck!  (thumbsup)

Looks like a good set of calves. One of the most rewarding things in this whole business is to show a calf you raised. We actually had steaks for dinner tonight out of the steer I showed this summer that was a second generation bred and owned calf on our farm. He wasnt a state fair winner, but he was in the top ten in points in Kentucky. Man, talk about the best steak you've ever tasted and memories you will never forget. Seems like you're lined up for the same thing. I wish you the best of luck. Also glad to see you representing the shorthorn plus, our steer was out of a shorthorn heifer. Just keep pouring the feed to them, I like the lighter colored roan calf.

I didn't want to see that. (the snow)

(lol) you think snow is bad this morning it was raining!! Rain in Manitoba in December can only mean one thing...horribe driving conditions because you know its gonna freeze in a few hours!

The steers will get weighed on saturday, if I remember I'll post their weights.

right now, today- the yellow/ white calf excells the field.

Down the road, I think the red calf will be the better steer.  Not sure how long the growth curve will be on the yellow calf, and not sure that the black or blue roan will ever have enough to him.

Course, it's real hard to see anything in those pictures...

and the other thing is that I like the solid red heifer calf the best out of all 4.

I may have to agree with you blackdiamond. The black one is either gonna surprise us or really disappoint us. My son picked him out by himself so I hope he did a good job.

We weighed our steers today and the results are, black steer: 754  lbs red steer 840 lbs and yellow steer 920 lbs. The heifer weighed 672 lbs. She was born Feb. 7th.
the yellow and red are two inches taller than the black steer at the hip

Well, we had our Fair this weekend and it was very successful! Unfortunately my son had to leave his heifer at home due to ringworm, but his steer did a fantastic job making him feel better about the whole deal. The sale was the most successful one we've ever had and Shorthorn steers were showing their place in the beef industry. These 3 steers place first(white) second(black) and third(red) in a class of 15 market steers. The next day, (different judge) they placed first(red one) second(blue one) and fifth(white) in a class of 10. Lots of people were impressed. All three steers are from the same sire, Hatfield Snowman 11W. Boys did a fantastic job, learned a lot about grooming this year from some good folks, and saw hard work pay off in a finished steer that they could show. They were pleased to place well, but they were more excited about the process of getting ready for the ring and being at the fair with their steers! Proud of my boys! The white one and red one weighed 1520 lbs and the blue one 1390lbs. The red one placed 2nd in Average Daily Gain competition with a ADG of 3.18. This was out of about 30 steers.

As you can see the steer has a slight size advantage to my son. We also wore hot pink shirts to celebrate 100 years of 4-H in Canada. It looked pretty sharp! We had put it to a vote with the 4-H members and it was the boys in the club who voted for pink!

Also, a BIG congratulations to Upthecreek's daughter who got Reserve Grand Champion heifer in her first year of 4-H! Her calf was Hatfield Dottie sired by JT Ultrawash, I believe. Correct me if I'm wrong upthecreek! Beautiful looking heifer!

The steers look to be beautifully finished and have done well, it seems to have been a successful family project.

Better still, the animals are all home-bred!

Congratulations (clapping)
