We are working on a new jackpot for this summer, it will be held during the Lewis County fair in Jackson's Mills, WV on July 24th.  WVU has built a new livestock facility there and this would be the first show held there.  The show is open to all states and all ages champion heifer and steer get $500 res $250.  It will be a one day event with animals allowed to arrive friday evening.  Animals will have to tie to their trailers as that part of the facility isn't ready yet.  There will also be a lamb show as well champ lamb $200 res $75.  Early entry of $25 on heifers and steers with day of being $35 lambs $15 early $25 day of.  This is a new idea we are working on and are wanting opinions on how to make it successful and do you think it would work.  I really appreciate all comments
Thanks

Titangurl,
I'm one of a group of five who put together the Southeast Oklahoma Beef Expo.  We had our 4th annual show Feb 13, 2010.  Our group formed an LLC to protect ourselves, and we also are a 501 (C)3, tax exempt for our Sponsors.  I just bumped the thread I has on the Upcoming Shows board so at will be near the top for you to see.  Please take a look at our website for rules, prizes, etc.  We had just over 200 head of Breeding Heifer, Prospect and Progress Steers this year.  Our show is open only to the counties of SE Okla.

Our format has drawn rave reviews.  Many have told us we have the best show in the State.  This year we added Breed Showmanship awards (Show supplies Gift Cert) during the classes.  It really worked well.

Our Fitting Clinic and Fitting Contest Friday evening is struggling due to the fact that most will not come in before Showday.

Questions?  Just ask.

Sounds great! I would love to have another show to go to during the summer before fairs begin. When you have more information, let me know. Would definitely go to it! :) Good Luck!

Are you planning on having class premimums and or breed champion awards. I know that they are extra expenses but it's the little things that can make or break a show in it's first year.

At our show 100% of entry fees are paid back in classes.  Also, every calf leaving the ring is awarded a crisp Five Dollar Bill.  We sell our Sponsorships for $500.  This entitles them to hang a banner, and set up a display for their business.  It takes us right at $8000 for everythng.  One of our local bank does a Free hamburger fry Friday evening before the Fitting Contest.

I helped run the AGR show n Nebraska a few years ago, getting the word out is huge, we advertised in Show Circuit and Nationa Livestock Exhibtor, i would recommend what ever publications are popular in your area. print out lots of fliers and hang them at every single sale, show, event, 4-h group, FFA barn you can find, the more people that know about it the better.

Im glad to see that deal-WVA has alot of good cattle and I hope it keeps breeders going. Look at Teets farm-they sell to alot of the highest end operations in the US -but allways have calves worth the money. Those $1500 blue roans in their sale would be quite a bit better than some of the video calves Ive seen further west

This is hard for all of us right now. Use any contact you can find- a car dealer might have shown before or have family that has cattle and would be willing to help out. etc., etc. State budgets are really tight, but some states offer loans for things like this. Maybe see what is there? Getting money for the Herefords last summer was like pulling teeth, so you have a long road ahead of you. Just hope things work out. You are a smart and motivated lady- you can rock this:)

We have trouble getting the Herefords covered every year, why are they so un-supportive of the youth?

We didn't run into them being unsupportive, by any means. We had high goals and wanted to make it top notch for the second time in Tulsa. They didn't run into anyone who wouldn't give. When I was on the junior board, there was one guy that floored me and said no. But, about 10 non-Hereford people covered for him. They were embarrassed for him.

I got a letter to donate to the OYE Hereford show about two days before the show. Someone somewhere dropped the ball. What shows are you speaking of? Just wondering. I think the saying from my daddy "you can't suck blood out of a turnip" is fitting for most fundraising these day but that is just my opinion.

KCK I always gotta kick out of your daddy and his sayings from my Indiana days!!!  Thanks for the compliment!  I tend to think it comes from growing up on the farm and in the junior beef programs! :)
