I've shown Simmental heifers the last ten years. I have a blaze faced Simmi heifer that I'm fixing to breed, and try my luck in the steer business for the first time. I've been looking around and I really like I Am Legend, Heat Wave 6, and Monopoly. She's pretty clean fronted but she's not pretty fronted if you know what I mean, and she's got a huge spring of rib. I'd like to breed her to something pretty fronted, big boned, a little more muscle, deep ribbed, and lots of hair(TH+). Here's a link to a picture of her at the FWSS last week. http://www.barronphotografix.net/photocart/index.php?do=photocart&viewImage=108446

For the heifer's sake (and your own), wait until she's a few calves deep before you try Heat Wave or most of his sons.  Try Dirty Harry or Hairy Bear this first time around maybe, and then I'd suggest Monopoly. I saw quite a few good Mon x Simmy calves this fall.

Thanks! I'm fixin to sound like an idiot here, but when do I need to breed her to have a steer the right age for Ft. Worth in January? Hence what's the "right age"?

STOP!  Please listen carefully.  DO NOT breed your heifer to any of the bulls you mentioned!  Breed her to a low birth weight bull like Built Right (purebred simmi) or Angus and get a live one.  Next year you can breed her to something stout.  Her odds of surviving aren't real good if you breed her clubby the first time.  I had about 15 Dirty Harry calves I bred to 2nd calf females and they are NOT low birth weight enough for heifers.  I bought two bulls in Denver out a low Birth weight Ali son called Mancini.  I would try that the first time if you want to try a possible steer.  Or maybe Rocky Balboa.  I've heard he is good calving.  Good Luck.

I really like Built Right, I was also thinking about Star Power. After reading this I think I'm probably gonna breed her PB. Her dam has had 5 calves and 1 set of twins. I don't have a picture of her but she's a really good brute cow. What would your suggestions be for her?

Honest suggestion, unless you breed her to something to class Angus (Who Made Who), don't expect to compete at Fort Worth with something out of a first calf heifer.  It happens, but planning based on it can come back to hurt you.  Breed her in anticipation of a heifer calf and the Built Right and/or Angus suggestions tend to follow that line of reasoning.

If you are breeding for Fort Worth, you are late for this year.  You'll want to breed her next Fall.  Breeding her now will prevent you from getting a calf on the right schedule for another couple years.

Unless that heifer is some kind of freak and can handle a 130 pound calf then I would not recomend Star Power. In my opinion Star Power calves are alomost too big for cows, I know we pulled alot of them last year out of mature reg. angus cows.
