I have been reading this forum for a few months now.  Seems to be a good enviroment with helpful, freindly people , so I thought I would join.  My family has been raising Black Angus for over three generations and I am now want to start to breed for some more show type stock. I have four sons who are almost to the age of showing.  MY oldest will be starting his first steert is summer.  I  have around 25 head of Northern Improvement 2nd and 3rd calf cows I plan on using.  I don't know very much about the bloodlines of other breeds or the club calf sires.  I was kind of looking at Alias but I am in the dark when i comes to cross breeding.  Anyone got any advice?

Well you have a very good base breed to start a club calf herd, even better they are all calving ease type cows.  You cant beat Heatwave in the clubby department, Alias would also be vey good as long as they dont toe out. Also Who made who would be good if you want to keep back some of the heifers. Sunseeker also is making very good steers and heifers that make good cows.  You could also do Dr.who, and Lifeline. good luck (thumbsup)    (welcome)

I have always liked alias but I have heard of some that toe out. My best bet is to decide what you'd like to cross your angus cows with. Look at their frame sizes & their structure. Don't pick bulls that will down or up size them to the extreme. Don't pick bulls that have strucutre issues if your do the same. Also decide on what color combination you can live with. If you go w/ a char bullyou'll probably get a smokey. Red bulls & you might see red even w/ your Angus females. decide if PHA/TH is a concern for you, that will limit the bulls you'll use if so.

Do your research, there are a lot of breeders here w/ Angus females that have sucessfully crossed them to produce club calves.

Thanks for all the replies.  I really like the smoke calves.  I would love to have some blue roans.  My boys say the would like so see anything on the place that had some color. Would it help so post a couple pics of the type of cows I am starting with?

Well if you like smokes, you can use Alais, interstate, milk man, and White boy.  For blue roans, you could use Killer instinic, Manchild, Rain Maker, Or a PB shorty like sonny, I also like lautners new bull Powerhouse. Pics of your cows would be great

Blue Roans- Sin City is working well with Angus based cows from what I understand , He is clean. Can't gurantee one but good shot.
I am impressed with Sunseekers show calves. Even though he is a TH C his steers and females have been doing well. This will be my first year for his calves.
I am real fan of WHO MADE WHO on sound females. The calves are usually pretty fancy. The replacement heifers make great club mommas.
Heat Wave- he is producing winners. BUT, he calves hard. Or I should say for me he calves hard. His calves are very marketable.
Smokes- There were quiet a few smoke bulls that came out last year- Milkman, Interstate, Great White my suggestion just watch the birthweights on some of your females as some of these sires throw larger calves.
Irish Whiskey is known to cross well with angus based females. His semen is now avaliable at 50/straw but he is a PHAC.

As red said, evaulate the potential to produce carriers and whether you are willing to breed around that or not. Remember, what works for some may not work for you. It seems like trial and error at times. I know a guy that his WMW's are not smaller framed and in fact they are larger framed. Go figure.
You can always come here and ask questions. No question is stupid. Great folks here to help out.

OHBr is right, Whiskey crosses well on that style of cow.  So do Chill Factorand Heartbeat.

and for knabe...wait until I introduce a new bull named Sled Dog and two others named Siberia and Tundra.  I hope they're not carriers.

These first three are Northern Improvements  X TC Dividend mothers. Top is my last first calf heifer that I am waiting for a calf out of.  Second is a first calf heifer with her first calf and her full sister who has her second calf is the third one.

These two are TC Stockman cows that have their second calves.  They are alot lager framed cows.  I would rather have good frame and breed moderate that try to breed frame onto small cows.

Here is the calf we are thinking about showing.  He is out of a Northern Improvement cow  ( her  second Calf ) and my BR New Frontier Bull.  He is about 6 weeks old.

I agree..she looks to be really big bodied.  If I had her, I would think about putting a Maine on her, such as Kadabra or Gigolo Joe.  If I were to put a Shorthorn on her, I would either go Sin City or Radioactive.

Thanks again for all the posts.  Sin City was another bull i was considering.  And I will only breed to clean non-carrier bulls.  Limits choices dramaticly.  Has anyone used Sin City's brother High Roller.  He looked real nice too.  I also like Radioactive.

I have had luck with Dr.Who....and on smaller deep cows Hannibal (he's dead now, so order early if you decide on him).
This year I used Jakes Proud Jazz and LOVE the results.
Have seen some nice Sin Citys out of angus cows.
If your cows are sound try a few Who Made Who's.....tried and true!!!
And this year am going to use a simmi bull called CNS Exclusive.
Good luck!!!!

One more thing that nobody has mentioned is temperament.  While your kiddo's are little you may start them out on some shorthorn cross calves.  Go ahead and buys some heatwave, sunseeker, etc. while you can still get it.  Store it in your tank until the showmen get bigger.  No kid needs a steamroller for their first project.

Dr. who seems to throw reasonable calves, we had a hannibal calf that was a real pet.  We sold a sin city calf in our sale last year that followed kids around the corral and licked them to death.  Just my 2 cents worth.  Good Luck and I really like the depth of the heifer in your top pic.

If you want temperment, Shorthorns are definitely the way to go. All of our calves are super calm and easy to break.  I don't know if this is the case or not, but every calf that I have ever messed with that was out of a Schrag bull was SO calm. I would really consider Deadwood if I were you.  We have a half brother to him that we broke in literally 2 days.  You'll get hair, excellent fronts, bone, temperment, and really good frames out of the way that Deadwood is bred.  Then again, I'm a big fan of Schrag's and also Gold Rush (Deadwood's daddy).  Jake's Proud Jazz will do much of the same, in a little smaller package with a little more muscle.
