"Over 4,000 comments were submitted to the Department of Labor about the proposed legislation. Policy analysts must review all comments before new laws can be put into place."

We will see if this country is about the will of the people or unneeded regulation.  I understand the purpose of the law is to protect kids, but they are going about it in the wrong way.  Attacking our livelihood and civil rights.

Heavy machinery is dangerous and I don't think anyone would argue that.  I think at the very most our legislation should do is require anyone under 18 to take one day safety class to run a combine or tractor

Yes, heavy machinery is dangerous, but a one day safety class will do nothing on making a kid or even an adult a better or safer operator.  Being a good operator has nothing to do with safety classes or liscences and has everything to do with knowing the equipment or animals you are working with and being aware of your surroundings.  This seems to be just another possible law that was probably meant to protect kids, but will actually hurt them and make things more dangerous for them and others.  Kids have to be taught self responsibility, to make decisions on their own and to realize how those decisions affect others ( how can this be done by taking any and all responsibility away from them)?  Match the kid with the piece of equipment or animal (experience level).  Watch out for them and teach them what to do and what not to do and let them grow!  Accidents happen, but most can be prevented with good teachers.

Does the govt. always seem like wayyyy over protective parents?

In reference to the article last weekend at FIRE camp for ffa we had a workshop about hot ag topics and child labor laws came up. This would also poetenial hurt FFA members who work on a farm for there SAE project!! I really really hope this doesn't become a law because I love the farm and I have learned so much about it! It made me who I am and its not a a hobby its a life style!!

Have been following this closely as it affects us personally, especially our son who has done farm work for us and been paid to work for others.  While this is being painted as a blanket bill covering all farms, the studies that have been done with interviews of the "children" have been mostly done with migrant workers.  THIS IS AN MIGRANT WORKER ISSUE!  The govt needs to address this as the safety and hiring of migrant workers.  I know of very few family farms that knowing place a child(anyone under 17) in harms way intentionally.  Yes there are accidents but aren't thier children deaths on baskeball courts, football fields and on the road?  So this is a save-thier-a$$ legislation that will not be able to be policed that will limit your youth from achieving goals and becoming the kinds of citizens this country needs.  It is a joke.  You lose the youth of these farms and we will starve.  Plain and simple.  Again, I bet the proponents of this bill have NEVER had shit on thier shoes or dirt under thier fingernails and I would love for one of them to go bale to bale with my son and his friends during hay season.  Oh wait that might be just what we need then all the idiots would fall over dead and we could elect farm reps.

Further regulation = more expenses
more expenses = less profit
less profit = less jobs
less jobs = worse economy

comment, so most of the folks making this law havent either a.been on a farm b.experience what kids like myself get from a job working and c.think of how many kids NEED a job to support their familes!! has the goverment took that into consideration!!! they should, however where this all begins is politics and not many agriculture related people havea law degree and stand up in the department and court of justice. so were need to get a c onnection! correct?

Thanks for bringing this topic to our attention. My daughter wrote her FFA Division II (sophomore public speaking) speech because of what she read here, and further research, and won her contest tonight. They are going to several before Area and District contest, but you all gave her the idea, so thanks!  <party> There were 10 there competing against her, so she had some competition!  ;D

Call your congressional representative and get their opinion, position, and what needs to happen to take it down.  You might also ask what their position on illegal aliens is because I bet if they are anti kids on the farms they are pro illegal alien and that who will get those jobs. Ask them if they support local density per household density laws which is how property tax is collected, ie if people are allowed to violate those laws, they aren't paying their fair share for schools etc.
