I got broke last winter and sold a kind of so-so Galloway cow bred to my White Shorthorn bull to a friend.....
. !!*&%$#@ if she didn't have a good red bull calf. That's her last year's heifer, same cross, in the background.

Very nice chunky calf Librarian. So are you utilizing these F1 females as cows? How are they working out? Are you keeping 3/4 Shorthorn or 3/4 Galloway's as cows? I'm curious if you are beginning to experiment more with it and seeing some results.

Thanks, JTM.
I don't have the land base to do much of anything, so I am attempting to place these animals in larger commercial herds where I can, at least, watch the results. This cow calf pair and the heifer in the background were sold to Kevin Fulton who has a large commercial Grassfed Galloway herd in the Sand Hills. He also bought a half brother to this red bull calf, sired by my Shorthorn bull on a different Galloway cow. The F1 bulls will be used on his cows to make 3/4 Galloway 1/4 Shorthorn market animals and replacement heifers. ( if they are any good).
I sold my Shorthorn bull, Amos, to a grass fed Commercial producer near Kearney, Open Sky Farm. Amos will breed up a F1 cow generation and they will be bred to a Galloway bull- Moto Moto sired, I think.
For myself, I'm using a red Galloway bull on my few Shorthorns and Galloways.
In short- 3/8 Shorthorn 5/8 Galloway would be the target and the object would be grass fed replacements.
