We were showing back when the switch occurred.  Right beforehand, things had gotten a little ridiculous with the way the calves would be done up at our majors, especially Houston when a lot of calves had already started shedding out.  Some of the twine jobs on winning calveswere pretty bad.  The ag teachers had a lot to do with our rule switch - they were really raising cain about the fitters.

There were a lot of people that thought it would really even out the playing field.  A lot of kids that just show up and feed thought they would have a chance.  They were wrong.  You can't get around putting in the time.  Thank goodness.

I liked the show better with hair, but even though we put in hard work on ours, we started doing better in the slick shows than we did with hair at the majors.  Still do.  We had the Champion Maine steer the first year Houston went slick.  But that same calf was the Reserve Maine with hair at the fall classic the year before.

Same kids and same calves still win for the most part - hair or not.  The price on the best ones that will slick has gone up a lot.  Colored calves have somewhat of an advantage in the slick show.  The muscle just shows up better.

I think this kind of push at the local level comes from those once - a - year showers & co.  We had them put up a huge fuss to make our show a no-fit several years ago... guess what, it didn't change a thing at the top end.  Those who were winning are still winning.

BCCC, what is their main argument/reason for wanting to do this?    I could certainly see going that direction if/when the State Fair changes.  IMO, it is not fair to ask you to put yourself at a disadvantage at a bigger show (State or Wichita) just so you could show at the local level.

BTW, are the rules for the state fair 4H/FFA livestock shows online anywhere?  I've been all over the state fair website and can't find those specific rules.

Did somebody say socialist?  Do you have to eat cow hair in order to be a capitalist now?

It's not about removing responsibility, it's about getting back to beef production.

since when did show steers have much to do with beef production? sure the idea is the same but were talking about dog with different fleas here.

The fact that somebody would even ask "since when did show steers have much to do with beef production" is a pretty darn good reason to go to slick shows.  Some have gotten so deep into the steer jock philosophy that they've erased any difference between cattle and dog shows in their minds.

BCCC, and the good ones still have it when you cut the hair off.  What's your point?

Well I'm outta here to go take my son to spend three days getting beat by a bunch of real good, super hairy calves living in coolers.  But we like our chances for the end this year - with or without hair.

You said going to a slick sheer show is about getting back to beef production, I am saying I see no reason why you cant raise cattle to have hair and meat.....Is that not what we are doing now? we have a buncha very muscluar cattle with alot of hair, What is meat? the muscle of a calf, so if you have a very muscular show calf with hair, I dont see how that is not beef production??? I am not saying that you have to have hair to win, but if you are compeating with a no haired calf, and the rest of the calves are still very hairy, The no haired calf isnt going to be at the top unless he is god compared to the other, and that will cost$$

Yes, your situation of having a slick show before a haired show is messed up.  I should have mentioned that I agree with you on that.  That's the one situation I'd agree that a slick show really is more harm than good.

I live in South Central Texas and when they decided to go to slick shows I did not like the idea.  My show career was already over but I still didn't like it.  It has grown on me and I realize why it has been done.  Last year was the first year my son was old enough to show in a major show, (it was so exciting and it made me cry, sorry for the mom sappy moment ;D) the quality of cattle was very very good.

I realize it has been done to level the playing field, in South Central Texas I don't care how much rinsing, combing, roto brushing etc. etc. you do you are not going to be able to compete with calves that are in cool rooms and not everyone can afford a cool room.  BCCC I do understand your point it does seem a little backwards in your case.  Well I hope everyone has a good 4th of July and Chambero good luck!!!
