You can't really judge fat market steers from a picture, especially when they have something written through the picture. However I sure do like that Stierwalt calf, looks real complete.

No I don't. That was the point that how can you compare when the judge saw them exactly as they were. I don't think you can have any grounds to argue on what they were placed if your weren't near that ring watching the show and also felt them for cover.

Most judges don't feel for cover anymore! :'(

And would they know what they are feeling?

Wasn't there so don't know what this judge did. Just saying.....

assuming they were both sound and were finished completely, i would say that stierwalts' steer had the edge cause he was a little more balanced but that doesn't mean the reserves wasn't balanced.

HOW MANY FAT CATTLE BUYERS HAVE YOU SEEN HANDLE THE CATTLE THEY BUY?
The only reason most judges handle the classes they are judging is to keep from getting a butt chewing from little Billy's grand pa after the show.

you have a point there, but it is probably a little easier to tell on regular fats that don't have all the fuzzy hair. there's times when you might only get the partial truth by looking at the calves but feeling them is like that reassurance. shoot, i've seen judges do it in breeding shows for the opposite reason though, to find heifers that weren't as fat.

Aj, you got it right. With 2 calves of this quality, there's no way to judge by the pics. Two more great Heat Waves.
I can't resist 100  Million, how did Cody Simpson do?

I agree.  There is alot of variation in hide thickness.  I think its the biggest cliche in the industry.  If someone had the cojones to judge a major and not handle one steer, that would be cool I think.

I thought this was interesting. Today a friend called and said that the judge was thumping the steers while having his ear close by, like thumping a watermelon to decide if it were ripe yet. I think that if the judge questioned natural thickness, that he was trying to decide if the steer was honest , if you will. Did anyone personally witness this? Just curious.

If the judge did that, I hope all of the other major stock shows are lining up for his services.  It will only take once and plenty of others will follow suit.  But then again Denver has always been at the forefront for being aggressive with these issues.  That being said, I hope these calves hang great carcasses with no problems.

I'm more than a little late to the dance, but we used Heat Wave for the first time last year and we have a steer out of him that is just shocking to me on how thick he is relative to any other calf we've ever raised.  Some of them are just freaks.  These major show winning calves are just amazing.  And in reality, if they were sound enough to get to 1300 lbs, they were "sound enough".  They don't have to walk very far in feedlot either.

Never saw that happen.  he did "tap" on a few but was not putting his ear down to listen real closely.  Since it is a felony in Colorado to tamper with livestock in that manner or by not following drug labels, I don't think anyone would take the chance.

Tough call, I like one from the side and the other from the rear, can't really tell from a picture, I'd take either one of them! (clapping)
