My kids are interested in showing a steer in Denver next year. I'm trying to do some research and am having trouble finding info. Can anyone tell me where to find historical weight breaks? Also , what percentage of the steers make the sale? I found what the champion and reserve steer sold for last year, but can anyone tell me what the placing steers sell for? Thanks for any help you can give me.

Yeah, I understand that. I'm trying to get an idea how much the placing steers sell for, so I can get an idea of what I can pay for a steer to take there. I also want to know how many make the sale so as to get an idea of what my chances might be.

I wouldn't spend any more money then you are comfortable with just getting slaughter prices with them... You never know how you might place no matter the quality of steer

buy the nicest calf you can without going broke and work your butt off! A $10,000 steer can be out of the money just as easy as a $2000 one. Showing at Denver is a great learning experience no matter what and some spend their whole lives trying to win Denver and never do.

Well, I don't know the answer to your question.  I always thought they only sold Grand and Reserve, but I am really not sure.

Apparently nobody else knows either, but they do know how much you should spend...judging from the responses.

They sell more than the 2 calves. I know when we showed hogs, they sold all class winners along with the champions. I think that they get deeper into the cattle classes than the class winners. There has to be a # to call to find out for sure though.

Not sure on the total number of steers sold in the sale of Champions but I know you usually have to be first or second in your class to make it in the sale. I know of a few times they have went to a few of the third place steers.

I can tell you that last year we took junior market goats, and no one could/would tell us how many would be in the premium sale until classes were broke and posted.  Turned out they only sold the division champions and reserves (3 divisions I think, could have been 4 - I've slept since then).  I do know that they normally sell a lot more steers than that, but the point I'm trying to make is that they won't make any promises on how many of anything will be in the premium sale until like the day before the show - I'm not sure why, just their policy.
