"In the months ahead, we will continue to look for new ways to partner with the oil and gas industry to increase our energy security," Obama said.

How can you say that after rejecting a project like that?!

Knabe- Do some homework on this one. I believe this is a canadian company trying to cross this country. So this might help exports for canada and create a few jobs here. Maybe Obama did the right thing.  (clapping)

LOL...the words "Obama" and "did the right thing" will NEVER go together.

You can preach all you want about turning the economy around and doing what is needed to reduce energy costs, however, actions like this speak louder than words.

The farmers and ranchers of Nebraska are fighting this thing tooth and nail.  I think Obama did the right thing for them.  What makes this pipeline such a good thing for the rest of us?  2,000 temporary jobs? Oil sludge moving through the nebraska prairieland over the ogalalla aquifer?  I don't see the upside. If you think there is going to be enough oil moving through this pipeline to prevent the purchase of one barrel of oil from the middle east, you would be wrong.

BJN, your info is wrong. First, that is 20,000 jobs, not 2,000. True, some Nebraska folks are fighting this. That is why it has been re-routed to cross only a small part of Nebraska. With the technology available, the opportunities for any leakage is minuscule. Compared to the Alaskan pipeline, which is considered very safe. our technology today is even better and safer.

And, Nebraskans need to know that ALL AMERICANS (including them) will benefit from the pipeline. Please read the rest of my post.

How can Obama claim to be for the poor and middle class, claim to wish to lower unemployment, claim to wish to turn the economy around, and NOT approve this project?

About 20,000 jobs created instantly. Up to 250,000 potential jobs (source Newsmax). This flow of oil would lower fuel, transportation, food, feed, fertilizer, heating and cooling costs, and help us become less dependant on foreign oil.

Even many members of the Democrtic party see the wisdom of granting  this project.

Every time this president speaks, look for the TRUTH, as often what he says is NOT the TRUTH!

I will get us out of Iraq by summer 2010(campaign promise in 2007)...............NOPE...................a year and a half, more dead bodies, and billions of dollars after he said he would.

"Pass the Stimulous, and jobs will be created, and unemployment will not go over 8%". REALLY? And just where are those "shovel-ready" jobs? over 9% (8.5% now) out of work last year, and "real" unemployment is over 15%. Only 6% of the Stimulous money went to job creatuion. The rest went to bail out banks, European countries, Wall Street, etc. The rich got richer. What about the rest of Americans?

Obama claims the rich must pay more in taxes! The rich are ripping off us off! Then turns around and has the support of all lib and Hollywood fatcats millionaires. What a hypocrite.

Agree with  a previous poster, we need this incompetent OUT of the White House.

Not  a joke
plan  announcing today will be making it easier for rich foreign nationals to get access to the US to bring
their families over as tourists . Fixing the economy with more service sector jobs at $7 will not work .

Ok I work in the pipeline industry, actually Transcanada is a customer of ours and I am sure the company I work for will be involved in the construction of this pipeline WHEN it is built.  (yes I said when because this project will go at some point, Obama has to many Union buddies to look out for that want this project to go.  He will find a way for it to go but not on his direct approval so he can save face with his wacko environmentalist base.)

Pipelines are not as scary as environmentalist make them out to be.  Most people have no idea how much pipe there actually is in the ground as we speak.  I live here in NW Ohio and you can not drive 5 miles without crossing some sort of pipeline,  I am not scared to drink water, my cows aren't dying off because of the pollution from them.

These lines are maintained and monitored 24 hours a day 7 days a week (that is what actually puts food on my families table, from working on the daily maintenance of all the pipelines around).  And this is where a lot of the jobs will be after construction.

Here is a video from one of our customers.  Actually the X-Ray technician in the video works for the company I work for.

While I am no industry expert, I would be more than happy to answer any questions about pipeline construction/maintenance.

This is a prime example of how people operate today.  They don't get all of the facts before stating what they "believe" to be facts.

that was the whole point of the stimulous right?  oh, except the money went predominantly to democrats.

nice selective logic.

realize the stimulous paid 2x to put windows in government facilities than they could have paid going through regular channels.

here's more out of control spending.

http://www.forbes.com/sites/dougbandow/2012/01/16/nows-the-time-to-start-cutting-wasteful-government-programs/

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) provided a $702,558 grant for the study of the impact of televisions and gas generators on villages in Vietnam.

hmm.  maybe they were trying to see the impact of liberal bias.

probably done by both sides of the aisle.  what a joke.

Many good commemts on this subject so I will throw in some of mine.  Along with our cattle I have worked in the gas and oil industy and sustainable energy (wind).  So as you might be able to tell I am totally for the Keystone Pipeline.  I would much rather see oil from our friends in Canada rather than the middle east.
Obama is not all to blame for the pipeline rejection.  I am not an Obama fan but to blame him completly for this is not fair.  Fisrt off his decision was influenced by none other than "Miss Hillary" our sec. of state.  And she was partly right on this also.  YOU can not permitte a pipeline that goes NOWHERE!!!  Montana and South Dakota and Kansas have clear cut routes and have permitted the pipeline. Nebraska has not!!  Untill Neb. gets a clear route and permits in place the state dept can not do anything.  And the only reason the state dept. is even involved is because this is an international pipeline and not domestic.    IS there alot of politics involved,,,YOU BET.  The Obama admin. could have worked harder with Neb to find an alternative route and to get the permitting thru.  Instead they blame the republicans for putting an unfair deadline on the project.  Again politics.  I can only hope and am pretty sure the Keystone pipeline project will in time go thru.  Not only do we need this pipeline for the Canadian oil but there should be careful planning to be able to expand the capacity to include all the new oil from North Dakota Montana and South Dakota.
Will it create new jobs,,yes and no.  Oil pipeline work is specialized and requires trained and cert. workers.  So people working in this feild already will be the ones sought out first.  But there will be plenty of spin-off jobs in food and lodging and others that will effect the communities along the route.

Well I was hoping it would be a go, seems having energy security for North America would be a pretty important goal. Meanwhile it looks like the Northern Gateway Pipeline to the BC coast is going to be a 18 month hearing sideshow. ??? It will probably take a major middle east supplier having an enviromental disastor or a war that shuts down supply to get either pipleine moving forward and by then it will be too late. China wants oil sands oil, that's why they keep buying up the major players.

Cornells study shows under 5,000 jobs created.  The US governments estimates are slightly higher.  250,000 is a joke, newsmax is far from a reliable source.  Weren't they screaming about hyperinflation because of the stimulus?  Also weren't we supposed to be defaulting because the credit downgrade by now according to them?  Governor of Montana was on tv today, he has talked to Transcanada and they are set up to run pipe through Montana.  He said he would have stopped the pipeline that Obama did however because the paperwork was incomplete.  I guess I never got an A on papers handed in incomplete, usually they were just thrown in the trash by the teacher.

evaluating this project is beyond the scope of most people.

both sides are playing to their bases.

the republican stupidity is that their own party is asking the same relevant questions the democrats are.

the republican leadership for some reason talked themselves into "forcing" obama to delay and not really cancel the project.

idiots.

I am wondering why we don't go into ND or MT and build a refinery there?  Go where the oil is, don't have to worry about hurricanes shutting them down.  Why do we need all of the refineries on the gulf?

Was wondering the same thing CoD. I heard over the radio that ND was building a diesel refinery because of the oil reserve and the huge demand for diesel to truck stuff around up there.  Heard they got permits and started building all within a year.  However having a refinery in any of those states Montana, SD, ND, and even NE might be a logistical nightmare, since they pry have a combined population not twice that of Manhattan.
