1.  When is your fair?
2.  Where are you located?
3.  Do you wash the calf often?  The poop can be very hard on the hair and if your goal is to grow hair that isn't going to help.

He seems a bit high flanked and something is off at the pins.

He looks a little green, which is OK, I would get him on full feed and start working on him. As for the dung balls on him, I would start soaking them with a little WD40 and try to work them off of him, I am guessing the weather is keeping you from rinsing him. If you can get them off of him now you will be ahead when you can start rinsing. I do not think he is high flanked just young, he looks to be balanced and have potential. He does appear to be gentle, and for me that always a benefit.

Good luck and have fun.

Thank you for the replies. Our fair is not until august so we have some time yet. He is only getting shown at our county fair and unfortunately it is a slick shear show, so we dont worry too much about the hair. We may end up showing at a local jackpot show but it is just a blow and go show. Is there anything to help with the flank?      And suprisingly he is gentle it took alot of patience and time in the pen with him as he wasnt very calm when we first got him. Thanks!!

I really don't thank his flank is bad, I think once he starts getting some guts on him the flank will be a non-issue. Had a few calves that started out just like him, once they hit 1000 pounds and started putting on weight and stopped growing the flank was fine. Get him eating 3% of his body weight in grain and I think he'll take off.

Do you know what he weighs now?  I agree that the flank will improve with the increase it weight.  Also I agree with the need to feed 3% of the calves body weight per day.  Beet pulp in the feed can also help with adding depth.

Like most everyone else I think he looks fine.  He is standing funny like they all do when learning to be on the end of a rope and the dung balls don't help his current appearance, but sometimes that can't be helped.  He just needs feed and time.  Our Fair is end of July and yours being in August I wouldn't wait around getting him on feed, 3% of his body weight like VC mentioned.  Good luck with him.  Post pictures as he progresses.
