The early bull sales in Western Canada have to be considered excellent success stories, and after 10 years of depressed cattle markets, crazy weather and wild swings in feed prices, I have to wonder where the money is coming from?  Three Simmental bull sales on Friday, Saturday and Sunday( today) have seen over 300 bulls sell for sale averages over $6000. The first sale had a top seller at $64,000, the second sale had a top of $23,500 and the sale today had a top of $82,000. There is one more sale tomorrow with a good offering of bulls as well, and these sales have all been within 100 miles of where I live. A couple of the historical reputation sales are yet to come in a few weeks so it is going to be an interesting spring.

This is a great year to be a Charolais or Simmental breeder.  Many of the bull sales haven't had a yearling bull sell for less than $ 3,000.  Even the strictly commercial bull sales are selling many bulls for$ 5,000 or more.  It seems the commercial bull buyers want their performance...
