Old Angus semen

I am getting an inventory done on my Dad's semen tanks and
am finding some very old Angus semen.

I thought some of these would bring some interesting
discussions.

What do you recall or know of these?

Any pictures out there?

Emulous line is what angus should look like IMHO.

I ve always liked the looks of the sayre patriot bull!

There is a history of the emulous lineage,  quite a story,  puts a face and name to the breeders.

If you want to flush using old semen, best to use cows that have been kept with those lines.

I was in vet school at Auburn Univ. when Lovana sold in their bull test sale(1982/83?) for something like $340,000; a record, at that time. 
I don't really recall what he looked like, and was not into Angus cattle at the time, so don't recall anything about his offspring other than the GDAR Rainmaker 340 bull, who made some pretty good cows.  IIRC, Lovana was a son of PS Power Play, so he'd have been a paternal half-sib to the old Scotch Cap bull.
Have seen Lovana semen still available for about $20/unit, recently...and had considered buying some just for nostalgia's sake, but looking at his epds, I suspect I'd be 'going backwards'.

Sayre Patriot was a red-carrier Angus sire, IIRC.

I don't have much faith in epds when comparing older and newer pedigrees. 

Older pedigrees have very low growth epds but somehow managed to weigh the same or more than today's cattle.

rate is what is different

Can you please explain what you mean about rate?

If you mean rate of gain, or weight per day of age, many of the cattle of 30-40 years ago had similar production and growth performance but are 30-50 pounds lower at weaning and up to 100 pounds lower at yearling epds.

I don't understand how similar performance would result in such drastic differences in epds.

I understand that database used for the make a breed media is the reason.
New database is based on huge weights, elephants and rhinos must to run to be entered on positive EBV/EPD graphis.
Old genetics show smaller final weights, same with a good weight gain, they will never reach to actual blacks.

Does anyone here have any old pedigree calves going to hit the ground this year? I always like to see what’s out there for old school cattle.
