I've noticed this cow in a couple older adds. Can anyone take a guess at who she might be or her lines? These pics are from the '77 Shorthorn Country Herd Bull Issue in a two page sale add and an interesting breeder spotlight article on Dick Prentice and Arrowhead Farms in Iowa. It looks like they were using Four Point Count and Alta Cedar Royal Oak at the time, but no mention of other bulls, cow lines, or where they sourced cows from when they expanded the herd in Iowa.

At one time they also had Mill Brook Ransom G9 2975.  I've got several Shorthorn Countrys and Worlds in my stack that I'll rummage through and try to get you some more information.  Seems like they used a white Canadian bred bull, too.  (white bull was Westmore Silver Welcome) I think they had a Caroline family that was of note back in the day.  They also used Louada Nugget or a son of his in the 60's.

I noticed the Caroline family was spread throughout several pedigrees. For some reason the ASA database won't show me 2975's progeny.

Would you say this herd was heavily influenced by the dual cattle? I noticed several pedigrees with Four Point Count and Ball Dee Perfect Count over Clark and Columbus females. Any thoughts on how well that worked?

I found several old Arrowhead ads last night.  In the early 60's herd bull issue, they touted their herd bull, Arrowhead Silver Nugget, I assume a son of Louada Nugget.  He was out of a Caroline.  In another later issue, they featured their Caroline line and listed 15-20 of their best females, all from that line.  The white Canadian bull I thought I remembered was indeed Westmore Silver Welcome.  G-9 2975 was featured in another ad along with a half page photo.  I would have to check, but I think 2975 was out of a dual purpose cow.  It seems as though I remember some of his daughters had questionable udders.  I do not recall the Arrowhead herd using much dual purpose influence.  I remember them from the early 60's and the Louada Nugget cattle would have been Scotch breeding at it's finest (that was when the herd was still in Indiana).  I was not aware that they had used Clark or Columbus at all.  I'll check on 2975's ASA listing.  I think his official name was Mill Brook Ransom G Nine 2975.  More later.

2975's reg. # is 3641922, numerous progeny listed.  He is out of Lilydale Binnie, a full dual purpose female.  There are two bulls listed, Mill Brook Ransom G 9 2975 and Mill Brook Ransom G Nine 2975.  One has a reg # shown as 3614922, the other 3641922.  There are no progeny listed for 3614922, but 3641922 has many.  There may be an error in the system.  I have semen both on 2975 and G 9, but have not used any.  If you figure out what to use it on and why, let me know.

We saw G-9 being shown at Louisville as a two year old by Sutherland Farms (they had purchased him from from R. Lee)  We had been told he was a Capone.  Regardless, the manager of Sutherland assured us they would not have purchased him had they any doubt of his heritage.  Maybe I should send in a straw for DNA testing?  No real use in it now.

Thanks for the bull info Oakview. Several people over the years have told me 2975 caused udder issues and to keep it in mind if I used the semen. The cows in their adds I've seen all have pretty nice udders, but the pics all predate 2975.

After a bunch of clicking I see the Clark/Columbus cows they bred to Four Point Count carried the Ellingdale prefix. Perhaps the cross or the cows didn't work, or Arrowhead just decided to sell those cows.

Good....liked idea to send G9 DNA for inspection.
Maybe we can clean some lines today, searching and testing "suspicious" bulls.
Never is too late for redemption!
I agree, never too late to learn.
