If you are only feeding him 12 pounds a day-and he looks like that-CLONE HIM and hope for a bull. O0

his breeder is breeding his mother and a bunch of other cows to the sire, because both my steer and his half brother were so nice. also he was a natural bred calf, the breeder owns the bull. So there will be alot more like him this spring!

You mentioned Bonanza, are you showing this steer in Texas, and if so slick or hair?

as vc said, it was Cal Poly's Western Bonanza in CA. and he is showing in CA with hair, hopefully a ton of hair! :)

It was the Western Bonanza put on by Cal Poly, in Paso Robles, CA.

The steer needs to be eating between 2-3 percent of his body weight a day to really reach his potential (20 to 30 pounds a day) You need to slowly work him up to that. The average conversion rate is 7 to 1, some calves do better some worse, at 12 pounds of grain plus hay at best you are going to be at 2 pounds a day.

Ive been trying to push him to eat more, but hes really picky and wont always finish his grain. I think he is starting to get a better appetite as hes getting bigger, so Im gona try to get him up to at least 15-18 lbs a day. He only gets about 1 flake of hay a day, which helps with his appetite for the grain. and ya he has only been gaining about 2 lbs a day

ok i know its been a long time since I posted this orginally but some of you wanted me to tell how he turned out. my fair was back at the end of july. He got SUPERRRRRRR picky about eating towards the end, May-July he barely ate anything. I tried soooo many different tricks i cant even count them. I finally had to cook him corn with brown sugar. he finally got to eating 12 lbs a day after the cooked corn, he loved it. but man he really went down a couple of times, going completely off grain. He weighed in at 1216 lbs, which is about 50 lbs under my goal with him. He placed second in class which was extremely disapointing for me.  :'(everyone thought he was gona win the whole AOC show or get reserve champ AOC but nope. but thats the show business. you win some and lose some. He turned out ok which was a miracle under the circumstances, but no where near his full potential. But again, some times it just happens and theres nothing you can do. Unfortunately it was my last year showing in 4-H so i wont be able to redeem myself! :p (we werent able to get a very good picture at fair except the professional one but i couldnt put it on here because it would be "copyright infringment" ) ::) <beer>

After a diet of cooked corn and brown sugar, he should taste on a par with Kobe beef!  Enjoy (thumbsup)

I know you are dissapointed, but thats really not too bad (2nd Place)! Anyway, you should be proud of yourself for sticking with it. I have been a part of a few of those types of deals where the family just gives up. You kept pushing and thats what matters.
