I feel he could do with slightly more in the hindquarter.

I really like your females. The head shape always catches my eye. Today I see so many Shorthorns with that long head. I like traditional heads or at least more feminine shorter muzzled cattle. You have some very nice gals.
Your grass looks amazing.

I have not been impressed with the Gauge calves I have seen.  I understand you're probably not looking for show calves, but I still like to enjoy what I'm looking at in my herd.  The Gauge calves in Louisville confirmed what I had observed before.  Not enough muscle, not enough style, just not put together the way I like them.  Just my opinion.  If you're happy with them, go for it.

maybe he's just not easy fleshing enough?// Probably not-other than the red calf in the first part of this-the ones I have seen do not have enough butt or lower quarter -which is a common problem with alot of the "performance" shorthorns-although-if you look at some of the newer ones at Jungels,Loving, those 3 guys in Minnesota,JMDC? , Sue etc, things are changing some-but SHORTHORNS NEED TO BE THICK-NO MORE EXCUSES-and please dont do the Trump pointing fingers routine-heard it non-stop for years. Before people go running down the Maines,Simms,Angus etc-with the sanctimonius "we are purists routine"-Youd better produce cattle that :calve as well, grow as well, and YES-show as well. And Im not talking about color. Here are two Gauge bull calves, picture taken yesterday.  On their 100-day test the one on the left indexed 112 and the one on the right 109.  Their dams are next to them, left and right respectively.
I am a bit disappointed with the bull I chose, centre, to go with this herd of cows!
So will you or have you used him again? The 75lb BW average is a bonus if the calves have some grow to them.

After we seen a short video of Gauge on pasture at Byland this summer that Luke Bowman had taken, we decided that red or not not LOL we were going to use him. Select sires only had 5 straws left from him here in Canada so we will be flushing our Winegum cow to him. She has worked very well so far with 3 different bulls so we really think this mating will click also.

Anyone else have any more comments on his progeny?
The bull calves are growing well and looking good, pictures taken yesterday.  No standout heifer calves that I can think of offhand though.

How come you are disappointed in that bull? What is he? Looks like his sheath may be a bit loose but he looks ok to me.
I have attached some more pictures of him.  He is straight home bred, from an 'old style' Shorthorn cow, no close-up imported genetics.

Heifer calves have been average for me, seven Spring 2013 and one out of five for Autumn 2014.

Of the seven Spring 2013, three have died from various causes, one, the lightest birthweight, had no grow in her and will be sold as a weaner.  That leaves three, plus the one born in Autumn 2014.  This is out of 30 doses of semen!

I have twelve bull calves, seven Spring 2013 and five Autumn 2014.  Of the seven Spring 2013 calves, six have been retained as being above average.

Attached, two of the better bull calves.

This is a Feb. Gauge bull that we have. He's coming along alright. He's out of a HC Neutron x Jealousy Par cow.

Good calves.  Like the smooth coat on the Gauge, looks like he has enough grow in him too!
