Opinions on trusting palpation

We AI'd a heifer on July 30th. Blood test done on August 30th confirmed pregnancy. The cow appears to be in heat October 10th. She's mounting another cow  and standing for the other cow to mount her.  However, the bull in the same pasture is totally uninterested. I have the vet paplpate a week later and he says she's open - must have lost the calf.
My dilemma now, do I wait to see if she comes into heat again, which should be any day?  If she doesn't come into heat do I assume the bull in the pasture bred her without me noticing? I don't want her bred by that bull so do I give her a shot of lutalyse and AI her next month?  Should I take her for another palpation this week?  I hate to give her the shot and she abort the AI embryo. How easy would it be for the vet to miss the pregnancy?

1.  Was it ultrasound or just old fashioned?
2. How often does your vet pregnancy check?  If they do 2 per month you might question it but if they do 500 a week you might want to trust their decision.

Your heifer would have been 70-90 days pregnant when she was palpated.  Unless your vet rarely palpates cows, I would trust them, thats not a hard pregnancy to find.  Its not that tough to lose a 30-60 day pregnancy.  We AI everything and blood test all our cows at 28-35 days and ultrasound them at 55-90 days.  We usually lose a couple pregnancies ever year (out of 45 cows) between blood and ultrasound.  That is the biggest downfall to blood testing, is if they are losing or recently lost their pregnancy, they will bleed pregnant.  We use the at home blood test and run them once a week, so if we see something funny going on, i just pull blood and run it again.

HGC, what blood pregnancy test do you use?  I didn't realize they have an onsite test available.
