Hey guys, my sister and I own a Firewater x chantel heifer and were trying decide what to breed her to. She's 75% Charolais, a real powerful made girl, good structure and if anything, a little heavy fronted for my picky attitude. Looking for maternal based sires, preferably something that is marketable, as we are just starting to sell show cattle.

Thanks in advance, just trying to get our breeding program organized before calving, planting, and the rest of spring rush.

I assume you'd consider him heifer safe them? Haven't heard him bred to many heifers

He in no stretch of anyone's imagination will do anything to remotely help clean up a front end as mentioned, he will slop the wrong cow up pretty bad

You would be a lot better off choosing a good LBW Angus or Red Angus bull for her first calf , you're asking for trouble breeding her to a club calf bull .. she already has some birthweight in her with Firewater .

Did you record this heifer with the AICA?  If not I recommend you do so if possible. As stated before Wrangler is doing great on Firewater daughters also claving ease bulls like Ledger and Big Ben would work as well.
I do not think a dark red calving ease charolais bull called SRK Canyon is a available in the US.  He would be a good choice if you want to raise a buckskin or red factor calf.
Other than that just remember use a proven easy calver for her first calf.  No point in to get a show winner if the calf is dead.

Thanks for the replies.
Mark, I do have her registered. I was thinking about using a purebred char bull but I am new to that area, as I have Maine and clubby background.
I realize using clubbies would be fighting fire with fire, which is why I'm seeking some help on here. Her dam is a heat wave x oahe wind, if that helps anyone out.
Again, thanks for the help everyone

There are a bunch of good ones in the i-80 -Ali clan: I-80 hisssself being numero uno-There have also been some real good calves in OKIE Texas Iowa etc out of Shorthorns like the Proud Jazz Clan (bunch of them-but Starburst aint one for hiefers) White Jazz also-along with a Char looking caf-and Capiche-YEA HIM-he youd be surprised-We are talking about a live low BWcalf-that would be quite a few cuts ahead of an Angus-as far as a show animal-NOT a bull like MAB-which could definitly be a trainwreck on one bred like her. Moto Moto has worked very well on heifers.  Complete outcross and a maternal specialist.

Look at RAPID REWARDS and what he has done on Heatwave heifers.  Wrangler and Ledger excellent purebred options.

I have not heard and BAD calving reports.  Smaller heads than his sire Pericles. Temperaments are curious friendly calves.  We had an average BW of 72 lbs on heifers, 74 lbs on cows.  Was told on some HIGH BW Herford cows he threw some calves in the 80s. Never touched one.  He will be in Denver come and see him.

Mark H, she is white with a touch of smoke. I am aiming towards a white or smoke, not entirely looking for any loud colors.

I am liking the ideas of Wrangler and the 7/8 calf he would produce.
I had thought of using I80, but was concerned when I heard hard drive can come out in him and throw some big ones. I have used him on heifers before without problem, but this heifer was our largest investment to date so I am hesitant.
Moto moto intrigues me quite a lot, thinking for my other young clubbier cows however. Harley, I'll swing by in denver to talk for sure.
I'm not fond of Mab, had bought steers I thought were going to be state fair contenders fizzle out at 12 months of age. Don't get me wrong, great looking calves, however, longevity isn't there.

Again thanks for your time and the replies.

Ever thought of using lowline or mini herford? Your guaranteed a small calf (less than 65 lbs) and the an easier option for your heifer. We started breeding all of our heifers to them, including future donors! You can register the halfblood lowlines and they are gaining popularity with the new exhibitors. Plus the calves take less feed and hay to grow and maintain and have a really showy and eye appealing look to them. Both have many state and national shows that are very competitive.
