options on heifer safe shorthorn bulls

I was wondering what a couple shorthorn heifer safe bulls there are. Any options?

best bet is breed them angus, either black or red- to much variablility of shorthorn genetic in the cow side of things... if you breed red angus, then visually one won't be able to tell a difference..

There are plenty of different bulls that have been used safely on heifers. In Alphabetical order some options off the top of my head as Jake's Proud Jazz has already been mentioned here are some other options

Bout anything from Rob Sneed. Look at the Double Duty lines at Loveings, captain obvious, JPJ, Then the red or black angus crosses work really well. Good luck.

I have been in the habit the last 2 or 3 years of breeding heifers to Red Angus and then I have the potential to get some Durham Red eligible calves. The Durham Reds I have been getting have been extraordinary-- cowy type females and steers that are feedlot sensations-- my son showed one 2 years ago and I couldn't have been happier with the actual market beef product this calf turned out to be-- he was also out of a first calf heifer.
I have also used Lowline Angus on heifers just to make me feel absolutely sure we probably wouldn't have problems. I have gotten a couple of really nice Shorthorn/Lowline crosses that are turning out to be super cows-- they aren't huge- just a little smaller than the purebreds and good calf raisers.

I feel comfortable using Purebred Shorthorns like: Jakes Proud Jazz, a lot of the Canadian bulls are LBW, Older genetics-- Coronet Leader, Pheasant Creek, Kennabar, Some of the Gold Spear lines, and look into Waukaru's bull string-- they should have several that are heifer comfortable.

F1 Red Angus x Shorthorn heifer (Dam's pedigree is stacked with clubby Shorthorn stuff (Double Stuff, Double Vision, Stinger)...

This calf was born 38 lb, and is by far our best heifer this year.. not a very good photo of her, but several have offered $$ for her...

Her mother is a small to moderate cow- and came back this year to again produce a upper end heifer calf.

what bull was this? 38 lbs is tiny!

Our prior Red Angus herd bull... Andras Trend 8040- super maternal, great calving ease.. Out of 2-300 heifers in the 5 years, we've pulled about 5 calves... All were in mal-positions.. The heaviest calf he sired weighed 75#- and this 38 was the lightest.

For years we have used Elbee Leaders "Gizmo" with excellent results. He has been bullet proof for us on heifers. He will not increase size but will give you some natural volume and spring of rib. They are not massive boned but makes a nice female and easy feeding steers. We used 329 and First Blood this year. We lost our first blood to first calf heifer who dropped her calf in the mud. We will have a 329 in another month.
Review the thread mentioned. I disagree there aren't any options for heifer safe Shorthorns.

Her little sister born this fall... Sired by Polar Express, weighed 62 lb @ Birth.
Not the best picture, but you get the jist...

NOTE: This is not promoting Polar Express as a calving ease bull-- but mearly showing that heifer's little sister. Our Polar Express calves have ranged from this one (being the lightest) to a 112 lb bull calf. I have liked them all, but he needs used on atleast 2nd calf females.

AR su lu osage is a very good option and i hope mav bellringer but won't know for sure for another month. There are plenty of options if you use your head and if i were you i wouldn't be tryin to get 38 #ers

you are right.. these are shorthorns, first calf heifers are desired, and able to produce and deliver 110 lb calves.. DUH.. what the hlell was I thinking?? Stupid me...

Here' to the OP.. breed your heifers to Salute, I hear he's perfect for heifers, and won't make any worthless 38# calves... Or any in the 50-70 lb range either, like the other 299 that Red Angus bull sired... O0

btw, for anyone thinking.. Semen is not for sale on that red angus bull.
