After a thread that was posted on here a couple weeks ago talking about calves coming fairly early has me worried that my cow is 1 week overdue from the AI date and hasn't calved. Is it really anything to worry about? We don't have a herd bull either.

Thanks

I tihnk that depends on the genetics behind the breeding. If the cow has larger birthweights and is bred clubby you might have reason for concern. You can always have a vet palpate her you trust. I have had some horrible experiences with overdue cows. We are luck to have some good vets in our area and the vet school is not terriblely far.

it's a santa gertrudis so we don't expect it to be a huge calf, but we might haul her to our vet tomorrow and have him check her.

I've had 2 Angus cows go just over a week past due (to AI dates) this fall.  Also, had one calve 8 days early to her AI date.  No problems for us either way.  I don't think a week over is too much cause for alarm if you know your genetics are pretty safe.

I wouldn't worry. I have Simbrah cows and it's not uncommon for them to go 11 days overdue. I had a 50 lb bull calf born today that was a week over...kinda surprised me.

True, our calves have been coming early and small this fall.  However, I had a cow go over a week and have a nice Uno Mas bull calf yesterday.  Pretty big calf but he is up and bucking.  I palpated the cow to make sure the baby was in the right position.  Sometimes when they are backwards they go over.  So, you may want to palapate the cow to see if the presentation seems normal.
