Anybody ever competed or watched a show that Jack Ward from Plattsburgh, MO has judged. He's judging the steer show at the Oklahoma Youth Expo this year, and I was wondering what he might like (lots of frame, and muscle I hope!!!)

I've seen Jack Ward judge on numerous occasions; the first for me at the Maine-Anjou Nat'l Jr show in Stillwater, OK 1993.  Jack is an Angus man whose main focus is breeding cattle, but he  certainly does a great job with Market cattle as well.  I don't think he would have a problem picking a little extra frame if the muscle was there, and the calf Structurally sound.  He is big on free moving calves, YES even steers.  Why don't you just listen to what he has to say about judging Steers?

Thanks AAOK, once again you come through. Any chance I could talk you into moving up here around Enid????? ;D I had been crying the blues for the last couple of months about the size of my daughter's steer, but after talking with my former ag teacher the other day, he told me that the grand steer last year was a bigger made steer, kinda like this one, so I felt a liitle better. After looking at that link you posted, now I realise that it's the same guy. I'm not saying that I feel at ease now, but I would just like to see her place in the top half of her class. That would be as good as breed champion to us. This is our first year showing cattle, and that would be a great start.

Jack likes them sound. A little extra frame doesn't bother him at all if the steer is complete. The reference to him being an Angus man,is a little construed. He was a Hereford man first. The thing I like about him is a 1400lb. steer that is really good, can win.

He's sound as a cat, but just big. Lots and lots of bone and hair. I hope to have him showing at 1380-1400. Do they show by weight or hip height? I haven't measured him, but he's probably 55 1/2-56 inches tall.

They show by weight. I'm afraid he might be a little bit to the extreme even for Jack. That scoundrel must be a feed gulping machine..Good luck
