Right, OH Breeder.  I'd like to hear something about what he likes, too.

And I don't have any Jewish blood running through my veins and thought the same thing!  (lol) And in my Gentile unknowing way, I added "vey" to the Oye!  Good grief!

Sound and functional, he is one of the better judges out there, he'll do a nice job.

The dates for the steer show are March 21 - 22.

Thanks for the input - one question, though... Is there a particular weight (minimum and maximum) that seems to be his "limit"?  I've seen judges who absolutely will not use one over a certain weight (like 1300 or 1350) and some who won't use a lighter one (in the 3 years Matt Lewis judged, he used only one or two lightweight (up to 1200#) steers a year in the premium sale).

As others have stated, he will want them sound and functional.  He may give up some of the extreme thickness to get a steer that travels better - a very good thing in my opinion!  His roots are still with breeding cattle, so soundness is more of a priority than with some steer judges.  I'm sure he'll do a good job and give excellent reasons that are easy to listen to.

By the way, he judged the steers at the Iowa State Fair a few years ago, and beat some steers that had done well earlier but were not sound enough to suit him (some probably never were sound) and had a few people upset.  My advice to them was to find a steer that could walk for the next year, since he would be judging that ISF as well!

Jack Ward will want sound cattle that are not to big. If he can find one to his liking under 1300lbs. he will use him. Some damn good steers in the 1310 to 1350 lb. range will suffer greatly if he can find one in the 1280lb.range.Not a bad judge at all,he just has that HEREFORD mentality.
