The best calf should win.  However i feel that with a touch of white it makes a good one that much more noticable.  If i were given the exact same calf in a black package and a black with a bit of white package as a buyer id probably take the black and white.  That being said there is no such thing as exact same calves, ill continue picking for quality first.

I've been thinking that some of the chromed up calves have been bringing too much money for what they are quality wise just b/c they're painted up. Of coarse the solid black calves have been so hard to get around in the midwest shows the past couple of decades. I think that we are seeing a strong movement towards acceptance of the smokes and Char. X calves in the last couple of years. JMO.

For the slick shows in Texas, the lighter colored calves seem to work better and are very popular.  Still a good calf is a good calf and a good judge should be able to find him.

I think that sometimes the painted up calves are at a disadvantage depending on where the white is on the animal, they can appear to look tight hearted or flanked when the white is just right (or wrong) in the belly, 2 calves that are identical in build and type, can look different when one is all black and one is painted.
Do not get me wrong I think some of the painted, baldies and even the Holstein colored calves look cool, just some times the color pattern can hurt them visually.

Personally I like the painted, smokes and colored calves but the blacks seem to win more consistently. I look forward to the day something besides black has a chance. As other have already stated the best calf should win but it doesn't always happen.

Love a good calf period.
With that said, a solid color pattern of any color just flows consistently and smoothly from point A to point B, where as a broken pattern is just that broken. The painted calf many times (depending where the white is located) appears all chopped up, it doesn't appear to flow in a consistant pattern. JMO.
