We have a local farmer who is growing irrigated purple millet for his horses. Just want to make sure it's o.k. to free feed to cows and horses before we decide to put our order in for next year. Any advise would be appreciated.

Are you sure its not PEARL Millett?

Pearl millett is fine for cattle, am thinking of growing some here. I don't know much about it, have to do my research still.

You know it very well could be. I was looking at picture of the purple millet and it just didn't look like what I saw that this guy cut. Does the pearl have a little purple tint to some of it?

Yes it does. Sorghum/sudangrass can be toxic to cattle when it gets frosted, but Pearl millet does not.

I graze pearl millet every summer.  Your right it is safe to graze through frost or even real short.  You still  have to be careful with nitrates though, but pretty low risk if you manage it at all.

Yes, nitrates can be a problem during a drought, but like you said, it's pretty low risk.  We grow it too.  We usually cut it & bale it.  Never had a problem & we have fed lots of millet bales.

So I think what I'm gathering from this is if it's irrigated and cut and stored it's fine to free feed to cows, calves and horses? How does it compare to regular grass hay or alfalfa?
