Purple top tube - make sure it doesn't clot! (or in this weather freeze!) Also remember to use new needle (and syringe if that is how you are drawing blood) with each animal ...a little bit of DNA from Bossie can screw up MaMa Cows results!  ;D Good luck with your donors, DL

DL, are there special precautions that need to be taken when sending the samples in the winter? I know in the summer they wanted ice packs. What about protecting blood samples from freezing? Or semen samples too? :-\
Thanks,

Just another hint... The purple top blood tubes are used because they contain and anticoagulant so that the blood does not clot.  When you get your cow bled, make sure you invert the tube a couple of times to make sure that everything gets mixed in the tube.

During winter months it's best to try and make sure that the blood does not freeze.  Normally a styrofoam container will be insulated enough (although lately here it's been about -10 degrees).  When sending semen the most important thing is to protect the straw from getting crushed.  If you just stick it in an envelope it will go through the mail sorting machines at the post office.  I think you can pretty much figure out what happens when the straw is crushed.  Although I do enjoy CSI quite a bit, a stained envelope is not always the best way to get a good genotype.  An easy way to send straws is to hollow out a ball point pen and stick the straw in there, again don't put it in a normal envelope it won't get crushed, but the envelope will rip on the bottom and when it gets here...no semen.....

Lacey -  your vet may have styrafoam mailers - depending on where you are you may be able to get one from a local hospital or lab - the idea is to keep the temperature not too hot and not too cold - and the styrafoam is basically an insulator. Some of the Walmarts, Meijers, other type stores may have styrafoam containers or cheap lunch containers - I would take whatever you find, put it in a box wrapped up tight with newspaper so it doesn't giggle around and mail on a Monday or Tues - You don't want it sitting at a UPS warehouse over the weekend! Getting it there in 2 days is good - for me that is ground - if you are in Calif it is probably 2 day air (I am now beginning to babble the first sign of cold brain)  - or if you have the forms all filled out maybe your vet will mail it for you - we have to mail a lot of stuff to various labs so he/she just might  :) Good luck and hope everyone is clean!
