Hi everyone,
As we prepare our first annual "Rolling with The Changes" online sale on Breeders world,  I need to build a new picture and video pen.  I 'v seen Hook's video on his pen.  Thought I would see what everyone else's opinion is on design.  Do you like square or round?  How big?  Pen for mother ?  I have a nice high spot in a little pasture that has a great background that we have used for haltered photos.  May use this spot for the pen.

Let me know what has worked for you.

Thanks!

Ron

Now Ron. Think! No square thingos, remember corners are only good for them to get stuck in. Have a good week-end and looking forward to hearing about your new arrival soon.  <beer>

In the past, we have had Don Birk take alot of pictures for us. His request for a background was "blue sky and....more blue sky". He didn't want anything that would disract from the cattle. He also wanted the pen made using wire cattle pens--they keep calves in and are not obtrusive in a photo. We made a round pen using 13 panels--don't ask me why 13 --it just worked out that way....Anyway, we also built 2 holding pens (corral panels) so we had a place for "momma", and the next cattle to be photographed. If you are taking the pictures yourself and don't have to worry about someone elses schedule, the efficiency part isn't quite as important.                Another piece of advice--try to locate your pen so you can take pictures in the  AM  OR  PM--years ago, we had our pen set-up for afternoon pictures. Well, long story short, Birk was a bit behind schedule ( caused by "pen problems" at a previous stop) and we only got a few pics taken before dark. Since I had built the pen so we were "shooting up" facing east, that obviously wasn't going to work the next morning....so I got to rebuild the pen bright and early the next morning before DB arrived. In my opinion, the right pen makes a huge impact on the ability to get good pictures, especially when young calves are being photographed.

I have worked with some that have a smaller pen to keep the calf in. Gets momma's attention, makes it easier on you and she is out of their faster. We always have more panels handy in case it is too small for that certain group. If they act up and don't like the size, then we put more on there. Whatever makes the cattle happy and comfortable.
