I used Shag last year and was very satisfied!  Have seen several comments about Epic and would like to get others opinions on the two products!  Epic is about $20 cheaper for a 60 day supply so I'm considering it!

Used Grow and Shine 2 years ago!

Would you mind adding a third option.  Selecting a calf with good hair , a dark barn n fan, n hard work.

Ihad a set of twins that I used shag and epic on last year, The one on Epic had much thicker and longer hair then the calf on shag. Did you like the shag better then the grow n shine?

I used shag with elbow grease and a fan with great results and I will use it with added supplemental melatonin again this year.

Farwest has it right! Keep it dark with fans and misters. For one thing, hair is genetic. Every calf will shuck hair. I will admit that it can be altered SLIGHTLY through nutrition, but if you don't have hair to start with, your best bet is environment.  If you are relying on environment, you have to keep it cool and you have to keep it dark! Just be careful when you take them to a show that, even being under fans, is not such an environmental shock that they end up gant.

Havin kids rinse calves is a double savings. No shag to purchase and no time for video games so you don't have to buy them either

Not disputing this at all!  I understand everything that your saying and the environment will be there!  The thread was started to see which supplement would you use if you choose to use one!

If your not using a cooler and rinsing 3 times a day and under fans in a dark well kept environment and I can get a little advantage out of a Sup, I'm going to consider it!  To each his own!  Even under the environment you describe, with the humidity we get in this part of the State if a sup can help lower their body temp like Shag says on the lable,  I'm going to try it!  Not really wanting to feed the two calves sepperate but some year I should try a control situation with one on and one not!

We have used Shag the last 2 years, decided to try Epic on a couple of heifers this year...we are going back to Shag. I think we had better results with Shag, plus I like the fact it is pelleted.  It is all too high priced, so I'm going back to what has worked well for us in the past!  JMO, of course...

I've never used Shag but have used Epic and it worked on all but one heifer last year.    I do wish it were pelleted tho.      Our ration also has Tasco in it which is supposed to help.

I'm fairly skeptical of supplements, but I got tired of getting "out-haired" when we were doing everything else right, so I decided I might not be as smart as I thought I was.  I broke down and used Shag on two steers last year.  And I nearly got my son sifted out of the Angus at FW for having too much hair.  Had sold several calves in previous couple of years with same bloodlines that never had that much.  Wasnt a completely scientific expirament, but its good enough to make think there is something to it (Shag).  Your just trying to get slightly better hair, but the line between placing at our majors and getting the gate is very fine, let alone the difference between just placing vs. winning.

Thanks for all the comments, very helpful!  Wasn't aware that Epic wasn't pelleted!  Was very satisfied with Shag last year!  This year going to have two calves on it so I thought I'd save a few bucks with Epic!  The pellet wins out, ordered my Shag!

Thanks,

Tony

What Chambero said.

I've been pleased with the results we've gotten from Shag, and will use it again.  Would certainly try something else, though, especially if it's cheaper, if I hear good reports on it.

(on edit) Dang slow dial up - that kinda showed up out of order.

I didn't have any trouble with the Epic .. but I since was concerned about the fines sifting to the bottom, I used some corn oil &/or liquid molasses to make it stick to the mix.    It just doesn't make sense when 95% of the other Sunglo products are pelleted why this one is not.

We have used both and epic definitely haired the cattle up more than the shag, the only negative is that the cattle would not eat it as easily as the shag.

Yes I normally have that problem at very first, I normally skip a feeding, and then feed just a little bit of it, and just add mroe each feeding, and they get used to it. I do however agree with kanshow, it really does need to be pelleted. Maybe if enough people complained and suggested to make it a pellet they would  ???

Does anyone know what the main ingredient in epic is? Sunglo website talks about it not being melatonin but doesn't say what the ingredients are. Just wanting to know before dropping dollars on it.

When I mentioned that Epic was not pelleted, I did not imply we had any trouble with consumption...it just seems like another source for fines that could result in sorting by some cattle. I'm glad you folks from KS that have fed alot of it are also puzzled why it's not pelleted... One things for sure, if I pay that much for a feed additive, I dang sure want them to eat it!      By the way, Tony, we had 6 heifers on Shag last summer...yep, price was why we tried Epic...but we're back to contributing to Stierwalt's retirement fund, I guess!
