Title: Poll Qustion - Top 10 Best Current Club Calf Bulls
Post by: SEA on February 13, 2019, 08:35:52 PM
It's cold, it's February, Denver is over, it's about calving time (albeit some people have long started) and it is time we are planning on what bulls to A.I. to this year, 2019.  So, with that in mind lets have a little fun.  Let's have a poll.

List your choice of THE TOP 10 BEST CURRENTLY BEING USED, CLUB CALF BULLS.

Any crossbreed or breed can count.  Please NO OLDER club calf bulls that are not now being used (at least to any high degree).  So, NO Sugar Ray, Heat Seeker, or Heat Wave.

If possible please list your bulls in order of first-to-last, that is your top choice to last.

If you only want to list 5 Bulls that is FINE!

Reasons for your choices are GREAT!

"Type of cow" mating's for the individual bull that works is even BETTER!

HIA
Monopoly
Fu Man Chu
IGWT

As far as siring steers go, those 4 seem to be in a tier of their own. Last year I did some recording of jackpot shows and HIA and Fu sired over 60 percent of the steers in the top 5. Monopoly is still prevalent among steer winners and IGWT seems to be gaining some steam. I know you said no Heat Wave but Vicklands steer that won the Kansas Classic is a Heat Wave steer. I'd say the old boy can still sire some good ones.

I think Heat Wave will show up in the pedigree of about all the top 10 bulls. The cow is 50% of your chances to get a special one. Promotion is the key.

In many top pedigrees Heatwave shows up twice.I used to think true F-1 bred to purebred of different breed such as HerefordxAngus bred to top performance Charlois was the best way to optimize maternal and growth traits. That theory isn't used much anymore although it did produce the most #s.Performance sells breeding cattle but the showring its style, profile, hair, soundness and finishing at right size plus a top fitter in your corner who many times sold the calf or owns the bull. Its not hard to spend more than the purchase price of a bull to promote him.I tried a couple and when you get the bill for collecting and pictures you are in shock.I sold a good bull many years ago and as soon as new owner got him name on him He sold semen.

Good post!  It is hard to come up with 10 bulls when 2 of them are doing 60% of the winning!

Made To Order could maybe be added...depending upon how stout the cows are.

Maybe add in MAB.

Maybe add in Hi Ho Silver.

I don't know if I would even recommend 10!

I'd still put heat wave in the top 10...here I am, in god we trust, Fu man chu, Monopoly still getting it done, and made to order for a clean one. Those seem to be the ones getting it done more often than not

My list goes like this and I only put Monopoly down a ways because he can through not so great rear ends on one and he'll throw a pud too.

1. Fu Man Chu - Awesome hip and leg structure especially for a Monopoly son.  Throws some frame on one and has some performance
2. Here I am - needs to go on a cow with some body, but throws some frame and muscle with great hip and leg structure
3. Unstoppable - Throws good sound structure with tons of body, they feed well and generally follow dam for frame.  Must be on a clean fronted one though.
4. Monopoly - He is still getting it done and they generally feed well.  Sometimes they could use more back end in them and rear leg structure in some is lacking.  They generally have great dispositions too.  Can throw an occasional pud.
5. MAB - He is stout and sound, but can be sloppy fronted.  MAB works great to down size one, but throws a lot of shorties.  Hero or Zero kind of bull.
6. Firewater - when used on a stout and sound Monopoly female..... Lights out!!!
7. In God we Trust - Super sound structured, big and powerful with birthweight being in check for a THC bull
8. Business Done Right - he'd be my pick for a slick sheared one

GREAT RESPONSES!

In my original post I said list your top 10 Best Current Club Calf Bulls as I did not want to limit bulls from people's poll.  Some may like only 3 or 5.  That is fine.  I have already seen more than 10 bulls listed and I am sure there are still others that some producers have used and would put in their top 10!

POST ON!

I am going to list a few bulls that I think have been doing well lately in siring cattle that win in the show ring.
Hereford / UPS Sensation 2296ET, Catapult 109, Mason
Angus / First Class sons, Classen, Style, Mention Primo, Haven't decided on Primo yet
Maine / Maternal Made, Comfort Zone, I am using a little SAK Maternal Gem & SAK Burwell
Chi / Dual Threat
Shorthorn / Red Reward & Right Direction
Club calf / HIA, IGWT, FMC, BDR, HW, Monopoly, The 2 bulls from Denver this that intrigue me are, Good as it Gets, & Duelo's bull, but I don't use fresh new bulls anymore at all. 1OAK interests me from last year's crop.
SM / So many, Broker, Quantum Leap and full sibs, Pay The Price and full sibs, Bankroll, Brigade, there are so many that can't begin to list them all or remember them  ;D
Oh and Char. / Easily the hottest bull right now M&M Outsider, Outcast, Char bulls that I have used the last few years are Firewater, Bohannon, and Diablo.
In parting to each their own. I love watching and trying to figure out what may work and what doesn't work.

On THC cows, I have had some success with Business Done Right and Lovin the Business.  Not sure if they were carriers, but the few we had were good haired.

Had a Lovin 620 out of an Unstoppable cow that looked really cool up til about 120 days old, but by 6 months old was just too tight moving and tubular and went to the feed lot and doing fine there. Full sib is on the way if she stuck AI.  Hopefully it's a better calf.

THF cows IGWT, but kind of need to have a good fronted cow or they can be on the plain side.

CAB- I agree, but Duello's bull might be an exception. His pedigree is jam packed with great cow families and great bulls. He is just too perfect with phenotype and I would think his females are going to make awesome cows. Time will certainly tell.

In no order (more like tiers)
Tier 1
Here I am
Fu man chu
In god we trust

Tier 2
Monopoly
Business done right

Tier 3
Red rocky (imo has potential to be first tier in a hurry)
Solid gold
Heatwave

Tier 4 bulls I probably wouldn't use but need to make it based on success for others
Man among boys
The walks alone/bim brothers

Curious to hear feedback from someone who knows more about red rocky than I do

Anyone know if something happened to Red Rocky or why the semen price has almost doubled?

Wondering the same thing.   I have some Red Rocky left.  I may pick up some Red Rocky 2 to breed a few more.  His mature pic looks pretty good.

Red Rocky calves seem to be selling real well in the South. Promotion, good calves and getting the good cows flushed or bred are the key to selling semen. I don't know how the top bull owners keep up as it costs a lot to collect and promote their bulls. The bull catalog price alone with all the great pictures and postage would scare a lot of people.I would guess more than 50%+ of the price of a straw of semen goes to the expense side.

Plus there are SO MANY of these new clubby bulls each year!  Heck, just Phil Lautner, Matt Lautner, and Wade Rogers alone!  Many are similar in type, or pedigree, or phenotype, and are brothers or half brothers, or clones.  Unproven yearlings.  Of which most of them do not “turn out very good” and are not heard of again in two years.

AJ, most, but not all. There are a few clean bulls getting it done, made to order, 1 OAK, Hi Ho Silver, to name a few.  I think the consistency comes from breeding the terminal clubby bulls that are carriers to clean maternal bred females.  If you look at most of the good bulls that have consistently sired champions there is a decent maternal pedigree.

There are increased risks, but that is why club calves don’t bring 1.50/lb and they don’t get marketed to the sale barn. As a family, we love what we do and spend a lot of time on breeding decisions to eliminate as much risk as possible. Those who breed off a bull’s popularity alone, I believe are irresponsible.  Knowledge is power!!
