We have been breeding polled herefords for over 50 years and in that time we have had one case of cancer eye and on average maybe 2 cases of pink eye per year.  We run 65 head of registered polled herefords and many of the cows that we run are pigmented around the eyes and have adequate deep eye sets.  Did you see something that alerted you in these calves?

Here is a bull we just purchased this past weekend at Able Acres annual sale in Wingate, IN. He is a Feb bull calf out of Remitall Online 122L. This picture was taken awhile ago from them. When you get behind him is where you truly appreciate this calf. He is thick butted, wide topped, freaky fronted, with massive bone. I'll try and get some pics of him when we bring him home.

What's on the bottom side of the calves?  Especially your new bull.  Pics are a little hard to tell what the front ends look like on the two bulls but I can appreciate their muscle pattern.  I would sure like to get behind the calves and see them, and they look like they could be little cleaner fronted, but should make bulls for somebody.  Everybody still thinks that Herefords are completely afflicted with Cancer eye, and really, it's been a problem in the past but the breeders have worked hard to eliminate it and it's rare now.  They also think that Herefords get more pinkeye than the blacks and that's absolutely not true as I just left a ranch where I managed 1,000 hd of Angus commercial cows.  Pinkeye was a big problem we faced.  However I had a Hereford cow that was bug-eyed and she did have problems with pinkeye as did her calves, so I shipped her and her brood.  JMO

i thought at least from what's visible in the pics, that the 831 steer had the best eye set. the others seemed a little more exposed.  they all appear pigmented, which i'm sure you're aware is not a cure all.  that link i posted is one of the most informative posts i've ever seen as far as nitpicking a trait that is usually overlooked.

haven't seen too much on pigmented teats on bulls and what they throw like on cows.

I do like pigment and deep eye set and would like all my animals to have it but ultimately when I sit down and look through my new calves, if I have a calf that I absolutely love then I am not going to cull that animal just because they don't have desirable eyes.  That was a very informative thread however and I wonder if he was having a problem with the cancer eye and pinkeye there in South Africa.

I have been surprised with all three bulls.  They all three possess thick butts, level tops, wide from the shoulders to the pins, and all display good bone.  The Able Acres bull is the frontrunner so far for most impressive.  However I think the March bull who is a month younger and only 110 lbs. lighter will eventually surpass him, and the May bull will give them both a run for the money.

That would be nice if that is the only thing you would need to consider.

There's some old foundation blood in those cows.  Stuff I haven't seen in a while!!  We had a son of Bond 75A that was a good looking dude but his EPD's weren't very good.  He was heifer safe, but as an outsider looking at his pedigree, no way!  He also produced beautiful females.  Do you have any pictures of the Isiah bull?  I really like the 19D's and then throw the FCF Magic in, I'm just curious as to what he looks like.  I like the pedigree of your new bull other than the Fed Ex in him.  Good thing it's a ways back!  Good luck with them, keep us posted.  I'll post a picture of a  granddaughter of Magic.

I wonder if he was having a problem with the cancer eye and pinkeye there in South Africa.

Keep in mind knersie has a very extreme climate. Not only do his customers like to buy pigmented bulls, but he's also stated that sometimes his cattle are ran through thick brush and bugged eyed cattle can get objects in their eyes while grazing. Also cattle that have their eyes set deeper in their sockets are less likely to keep dust and seeds, etc. in their eyes, which helps keep eyes from watering and on and on. Eye set and pigment is something to take a close look at, but the quality still has to be there past the face. JMO
