Any thoughts on a wormer and lice control not to cause shedding. Have used pour on ivomec and had calves shed.  Realize there is injectable but that gives no lice control.  Am I correct?  Thanks

I dip my calves in permectrin (I hope I got that right) and it gets rid of the lice. I mix it in a bucket and pour it down their tops and brush it into their legs and stomach area. It's like a fly repellant, but it kills lice also. I mix it strong and put it on and then wash it off within 24 hours. I do it twice or until I no longer find eggs in the switch of the tail. Our commercials get pour-on and injectible.

any time i pour calves that are going to be shown in a somewhat short amount of time, i always pour, let i sit a day or at least over night then rinse it out the next morning, then soap it out really good that night. some wormers can "burn" hair off where it is left on too long

I am almost sure that injectable ivomec treats lice, and I don't think it takes very much either.

I always thought that only the pour-on worked on lice and found out that is incorrect.  Injectable does also.

However, I use Cydectin (the purple wormer).  It is an oil based solvent and doesn't cause near the skin irritation as Ivomec or its generics.

When i used a full dose ivomec pour on it not only caused the skin irritation where it was poured on, worse than that it caused shedding on the whole body.  This was in january.

This question was brought up to Kirk Steirwalt at one of his AkSarBen clinics.  He said use Cydectin (sp maybe wrong) just like they said above its the purple stuff.  He stressed do not use the generic of it on showcattle.  The generic is great on cows ect, but on show heifers it can burn them up

Just looked on a bottle of Dectomax.  Says for control and treatment of sucking lice.  I guess that would cover external parasites.????

I've tried everything.  For both treatment of  parasites, and show calf friendly, I recommend Safe-Guard® Paste.

Does the paste work well on lice because that's my preferred method but i couldn't find anywhere on it where it said about lice once when i checked.

We worm our show cattle with Safegaurd pellets in the feed or Panacur drench (same product as Safegaurd)  If we need lice control I pour them with De-Lice or Durasect and have not noticed the skin irritation or shedding.  Generic products are ok for cows and general young stock but hard on show cattle hides.  The generics however do not control everything as good as some of the more expensive name brand products.  We still use generic ivemec on the cows but in addition to Safegaurd or Cydectin, not as the only form of wormer.
