I was looking through the Belt Buckle Bonanza winners, and I am a little confused as to what is the difference between a progress steer and a prospect steer?  And why could one animal beat another in the Prospect category, but then come in opposite positions in the Progress category?

Prospect show is everything under 900 pounds I believe and the Progress show is everything over 900 pounds

depends on what part of country, and what part of the year.  Basically-- they're same.

Different animals beat others from personal judge standpoint.  No different than an ANgus heifer winning at Kansas City- and losing at Louisville.

Prospect was 900 and down Progress was 901 and up.  No steer crossed over from Progress to Prospect show....at the BBB they do 2 rings for each division.  There are 2 rings for Progress (Ring A and Ring B) and then 2 rings for Prospects (Ring A and Ring B).  It has 2 differenct judges....so it's not uncommon to see a calf from Ring A placing be different in Ring B.

oh okay, so that was why I was confused, I thought they had a banner from two different things, when really it was just two different judges.  Thank you for clearing that up.

Actually, the weight limit for prospect steers is 875 at the BBB.  Everything over that shows as progress.  The progress show is much smaller than the prospect show at BBB.  Progress steers showed on Monday, prospects on Tuesday.

For some reason, almost all of our shows down here developed the multiple ring system where you basically have independent shows under different judges.  I still don't particularly care for it, but it worked out well for us at the BBB (4th Overall in Ring A, Grand Champion in Ring B).  Multiple rings makes shows last forever.  But it does do a good job of getting your calves used to showing for long periods of time which helps for the majors.

For practical purposes, progress calves this time of year are usually headed to the State Fair of TX, KC, Louisville, or Denver with some of the smaller, slower growing ones working for Fort Worth.
