Promotional Bulls?
« on: September 01, 2012, 06:08:41 PM »
I have a bull calf that I would like to use as a promotional bull out at National Western this year.  I was curious as to how much it all costs, what people think about taking a promotional bull out to Denver who have done it before.  As well as any other advice or comments.

I dont know if it cost anything to display them but you ar egoing to have alot of expenses. Your going to need a banner, 100's of flyers, idk what ur status as a fitter is but ur going to need 2-3 guys at the chute, truck all your stuff there, (that means about everything you would take to a jacvkpot but for a week+. pics of the bull calf? brredding?

Unless they are counting fuel (and alot of it) cause I just got an email back from the NWSS requesting information on this. Is $750 (the smallest pen or slot) and up depending on how big up a pen or slot you want, that is if they have spots left. You have to put a request in and your put on a first come first serve waiting list and that is if the people from last year do not reuse there slot. The people that have used a slot in the last 3 years have 1st shot at it, so people like Lautners, Trausch and Rodgers will have 1st shot along with anyone who has had a slot in the last 3 years. That is just the pen or little slot rental, then you have all the extras with it (grooming supplies, feed, banners, flyers, fuel and so on). Hope this clears it up for you.

IMO if your bull is good enough to get a bigger name player that has promoted several bulls in the past interested in promoting him on a share bases, that is a good way to get your feet wet. You'll get name recognition with this promoter and he'll know what all needs to be done. Keep very close tabs on your expenses for the next time you may want to try to get a bull out there. I wouldn't know what the odds are of having a bull take off, but I do know that there a pile of bulls promoted that end up in the red column on paper.

I have two bull calves right now.  One is a Monopoly out of a Dr. Who son cow, the other is a Bodacious X Jimmy the Greek (heifer in my avatar picture).  I will have to get some pictures when it is a little dryer out.

Last I knew the waiting list was very long.  Many folks have display space rented every year, whether they plan on using it or not, because if they let it go they'd drop back to the bottom of the list if they should want it again.  So those who aren't using their space will "sublet" it to someone else - there are usually plenty of people willing to pay much more than the original cost from NWSS to get a space.

Adding up everything it costs for just say 2 people to take a bull to Denver and promote him for 3 to 5 days, I'd bet most bulls cost every bit of $3000 to display.

The subletting thing changes quite a bit two years ago.  You'd have to ask the NWSS but from what I understand it's not allowed at all any more.

That's good to know, I think it got pretty crazy sometimes.  Awhile after I posted that, I got to thinking that my experience on the subject isn't real current...
