I'm not sure how the thousands of deer and other animals in our pasture would be kept from crapping in the creek.  Maybe the local game warden could put up some warning posters.
hahahaha <beer>

this was actually discussed many decades ago at the federal level and whether fences were necessary to keep wild animals out of rivers, streams and creeks.  i'll see if i can find the reference.

I can remember my father and grandfather going over all the moving parts with me and told me what to stay away from and what precautions to take if I had to be near moving parts. Sh*t happens. Accidents occur on the farm and its up to the parents to decide whether or not their child should be or shouldnt be doing a certain chore, not the government.

That's great you had quality parenting.  Unfortunately, for many, there are no qualifications to procreate.

"They should drop govt regulated age restrictions on tobacco, alcohol, and playboy (angel) as well.  It should be up to the parents to decide whether or not their child should be consuming those products."  ::) Surely, the anti-regulatory men of principle wouldn't have a problem with this? ? ?

How is this not going to directly effect 4-h and ffa. How many kids are showing and fitting other peoples animals. By the proposed law they can not be in pens with bulls and cow calf pairs. Does that not mean since those animals are not there familys at the show they couldn't be in the ring maybe even building depending on how the law is writed and inforced by who is regulating it. They cant administer vaccines, brand or be around when animals could be harmed. So does that mean they cant be there while calves are taged and processed for showes. Cant go in feed bins or be higher than 6 feet off the ground so how are they are supposed to feed and care for their projects if grandpa is keeping the animal at his place and gave them the calf to show.  How about kids helping other club members at shows those aren't their cattle might cross the line of the law. Oh 4-h's rodeo is gone how many stud horses are rode and bucking bulls are double bad could be mean and are in tact males. how many halter horses are shown by people that aren't the owner and till stallions. I'm not saying it is how the law will run but this is a pretty good examples of how it could be twisted to end 4-h and ffa. Plus on another note whos to say they aren't using this law to make people be ok with it then a few years later take away the exemtion for parent owned farms.

WOW, XBAR, you are VERY assuming?  What makes you think that I would throw my child into an unsafe situation - or anyone on here for that matter???  So, your profile says you are 26? When did you start working/learning in the ag industry?  By your comments, it sounds like it must have been after 18!  Did your mom hold your hand while you crossed the street until you left home or are you still at home?
I will not spoil my kids by not making them do chores (they are very well compensated for their work and they can CHOOSE not to do chores, but there is no reward for that here!).  Let's talk about what they COULDN'T do if these kinds of laws were passed (since we are managers):  They couldn't clean the barn nor pitch hay to the horses in the corral nor help gather cows....etc.  We practice safety here everyday - I can be a helicopter mom when it comes to my kids' safety, but it sounds like you had your butt a little too powdered.
My daughter rides big circles with the guys and she loves it and does a great job.  We run a ranch of 160,000 acres with 1450 hd of commercial cows - so there is always plenty of riding and roping (which I am FINALLY allowing her to do for safety reasons!!!!!!!!!!).  She is a girly girl - but I bet she could already outwork you (if you are a believer of your own comments).
You, along with the pencil pushers proposing these laws, feel that the majority of ag people are not capable of teaching their children safety - when in fact we practice it everyday.  You also don't feel that the majority of ag people are not fit to procreate.  Are YOU?  Man, I wouldn't want any of my daughters hooking up with a pansy that you sound like.
More kids get hurt playing sports than do on farms and ranches - why don't you go find a forum that is all about regulating school sports.

Maybe instead of regulating all of the good parents and families out there we should simply punish those who aren't doing their job.

BTW-AMAZING NEWS FOR NOW>>>>>It was reported on our local NBC station this evening that the labor department has dropped this for now.

I'm not quite sure how I should take that.  So, I will leave it to you to tell me what you meant by it.  Although, if you are unbelieving in my station, check out the May issue of the Western Horseman (starting on pg 14 then 66).  I have browsed through your past posts and you are quite articulate yourself; however, a bit tetchy.  I am generally not a confrontational person unless someone attacks me and try to be respectful, even if I disagree.  And, if you were mocking me with your comment, perhaps you need to learn some respect yourself.  Presentation is 9/10 of the battle.  Clearly, we disagree on this issue, but you know what ASSUME does - makes an ass out of you and me.
And just b/c I am married to a ranch manager doesn't make me a ranch hand!  By trade, I am a saddlemaker.
