What is everyones opinion on the best feed for a prospect calf.  We have a SOS x Sunseeker steer calf and a SOS x Ali.  Very nice looking calves.  Our big steer, market heifer and two breeding heifers are getting a ration with Grand Finale from Form-A-Feeds but I am trying to cut costs a little. Any other suggestions for a feed rations.  Keeping in mind that I do not want to burn them out on feed.  They have not been weaned but are seperated from the mother during the day and in early evening and put back on the mothers.  Currently we are feeding the Grand Finale ration but again I am trying to cut costs a bit.  I have even considered Sprout brand through Mills Fleet Farm but wasnt sure if that would be a good enough ration.  The SOS x Sunseeker is about 325 lb and the SOS x Ali is about 300.  Any comments would be appreciated.

My first thought is cutting cost, which is something we all want to do, may not be the best thing.  One of the most important things needed when feeding out show cattle is consistency.  That includes consistency from the mill.  If you try cutting cost by going to a cheaper feed this may be one of the things you will sacrifice.  As a result, you will have more problems with calves off feed or scoured.  This in return will hurt your ADG and in the long run end up costing you more.  I'm not familiar with the brand of feed you are feeding but if your happy and your calves are happy then I would not change in an effort to save 30.00 a month.  I feed a custom mix now but I used to feed ACCO feed and I found their feed to be pretty darn consistant and on the batches I received that were a little off they replaced my feed with no hassle.  They also have a nice junior program that rewards the showman with different prizes after winning with their feed...G-Luck
