Is the Maine Anjou bull SLC Sooner 101M, semen, available for open sale?  If so, where is he available at, and how much a unit?

Thanks!!

Also, did I hear correctly that there is a full brother to "Sooner"?  What is his name?  Not sure of the brother's age or if he has progeny on the ground?  Does the brother look the same phenotypically, and throw calves the same as his brother, Sooner?  Is the brother's semen available?  Again, where and at what price per unit?

Thanks in advance!!

You may want to take a look at the Sooner sired sons out of GVC cows. You can find some good ones. I personally think that the Wisdom bull is a very good bull. GVC Special Delivery has been doing a good job also.

Dennis Garwood at GVC is an excellent source for bulls, no matter what you are looking for in the Maine or Angus breed.  We have used the Fortune and Glory bull that came from GVC with great success.  We even flushed to him this year.  We have flush calves due next fall out of GVC Suh also.

The full brother to Sooner is Boomer.  I believe you can get semen from him at Bushy Park.

Boomer, the full brother to sooner, is owned by Bushy Park Farms.  Semen is now available through cattlevisions @ 30 a unit.  Bushy park has some sons pictured on their website.  I have not seen a picture of Sooner, but they have a photo of Boomer on their Herd sires page.  Just from pictures alone the boomers don't have quite as much volume and thickness.  But I haven't seen any in person so I my observations aren't worth much.  GVC Maverick is a sooner son that seems to be siring thick bulls and broody heifers, but again this is from studying pictures.  I have a Maverick coming at the end of the month.  Green Valley has a couple other Sooner sons that they use as well.  Dennis Garwood runs GVC and is a super nice guy to talk to.  I have some special delivery calves and I think his females are going to be excellent.  Another sooner son that has peaked my interest is GCC Merger.  Merger sired some really strong females in their sale, lot 1 brought 39K.  Merger is also available through cattlevisons, and you can check out progeny pics on Griswolds website.  Knabe is a regular contributor to Steerplanet and claims the sooner females have very little milk.  I don't know from personal experience, and I have not asked anybody that has used him.  Boomer semen was pretty expensive until recently so I went with Maverick.  I felt like maverick is backed by the kind of productive females that I would like to have in my herd.

i don't know from personal experience, just that the bloodlines have some of the lowest epd's for milk in the breed.

polleroid, sire of limited edition who is sire of sooner  milk epd  5.9
http://maine-anjou.org/pagedisplay.php?id=35315

poplar hvn red alert, grandsire of polleroid                milk epd -1
http://maine-anjou.org/pagedisplay.php?id=8178

dazzlers fancy dancy (another animal with no picture)  milk epd 31
http://maine-anjou.org/pagedisplay.php?id=171402

hall's legacy plus, sire of sooner's dam                      milk epd 12
http://maine-anjou.org/pagedisplay.php?id=286946

polled pursuit
http://maine-anjou.org/pagedisplay.php?id=36186  milk 8.4

draft pick is in there at 18

so it's a mixed bag.  if you get one that milks, great.

Sorry Knabe if I misspoke for you.  On the topic of milk epd's............I am considering BK Warrior.  His milk numbers look pretty good.  Anyone have any comments regarding this bull.  Anyone have any calves on the way out of him?  I really like his look and pedigree.

Just was watching the Rapid City Maine show on DV Auctions, Champ and Res Maine bulls were both Mavericks.  Limi sale will be on shortly, followed up with the Shorthorns and then Maines.  There are quite a few Mavericks that you can see if ya want to watch.

I really liked Maverick at Green Valleys Sale, wasnt going to use him, cause he was supposed to be collected at Hawkeye,  then Matt Lautner advertised that he was selling REI collected Maverick semen for $10 and now I have 30 straws to use this spring.

Have a good one

i can't remember, but i think sooner could be homozygous for the 3 tenderness genes or close to it.

i can't remember, but i think when it was available somewhere, i remember not seeing an animal that was missing a marker.

with the caveat that these markers may or may not be relevant across breeds.

I am sure that the Grand is lot 17 from Weber which is a Maverick X Kadabra cow,  Reserve is lot 12  which is a Maverick X Gold Club cow  --  also from Weber Show Cattle

I just looked on the American Maine Anjou Association Website and SLC Sooner 101M is listed with an EPD for Maternal Milk of 23.2.

CAB:

Is Wisdom a GVC/Green Valley raised bull?  Is he a SLC Sooner 101M son? What is his dam's side?  Is he owned at least in part, by Barry Nowatzke?

Thanks,

I am no expert by any means, but I wouldn't put a nickles worth of stock in Maine EPD's, just my opinion, but those numbers have been so jacked with I sure wouldn't base breeding decision off of them.

in general, i would agree on the maine herd numbers, but,

red alert

BWT WWT YWT        Milk
8.5          61.2 116.5 -1.0
.89          .88 .88         .87

i don't think you will find many who will dispute with the numbers for red alert as he was from a different era than say the last 10 years

I agree with both Jill and Knabe. Modern EPD's aren't worth a nickel. Early EPD's seemed more accurate. Some current breeders are trying to change this and document as to how their cattle really perform.

GVC Special Delivery is a Daines ICON 156H son and GVC Statesman 4R ET is a DCC The Man son,  I believe.  I could not find the sire of GVC Suh and GCC Merger.

I was lead to believe that the SLC Sooner 101M bull was a little different type Maine Anjou bull than most of the other popular AI bulls available.  That is why I was taking a look at him and his sons.

In your opinions, how do You 'All see him?
