it's a way of being able to 'tell', how much the readers like, hate, or agree with what you are saying...  right under it says pos or neg...  somebody types something you agree with, you can give out a pos.  or somebody types something that you think is off the board, flip them a neg..

good, long stories get pos too..

basically it's a way to show some support, and a way to tell the posters who garner up the offering of good advice...

the problem is that if you're new and you pop off to somebody that people really like on here, your karma downs hugely, as much as you could be in the hole by 10 or 20...

Personally, my karma as varied from as much as +40 to - 20 in the few short years I've been a member of SP...

Does anyone even give out karma anymore? I always try to give some to the new guys, but it seems not many people think about it.

agree.. don't know that it really ever was popular... atleast since I've been around.  I think it all eludes to this question, as in the new people, which are plentiful, don't know what's going on..

Thanks to the two who  (thumbsup) for my answering the question...
