Does anyone know anything about the plant red sorrel? It's also called sheep, horse, or cow sorrel. This weed has infested our pastures and I want to make sure it's not poisonous. I've read that it is and it isn't, so some other input would be great!

I used to chew the stems all the time as a kid - they have oxalic acid...lending a tart flavor.
I suppose that in large amounts, they could be toxic to some species, but I have never seen oxalate toxicity in a grazing animal.
Their presence - especially in the amounts you're describing, suggest you need to soil test and lime/fertilize accordingly.

You are sure that you've got sorrel, and not dock, right?

Yeah it's definitely time to re seed the pasture. Was hoping to get one more year out of it.

I've read that hastate leaf dock and sorrel is the same thing? It has that distinct arrow type of leaf at the base.
