just have to have one parent registered of more than 1/4 blood in either association...

37.5 is more than 25, which is equal to 1/4,
and 1/4 is less than 3/8 which is equal to 37.5.
???

Most clubby bulls are also papered as Mainetainer-- so you might get a few % points from that side of the pedigree as well.

here's a nice chart for you to look and see what you'd get.

http://www.maine-anjou.org/upgrade.html

B/c I'm not a Maine person- I also checked the chart out- and was wrong- in which if one parent is NOT registered as a maine deal-- then you cannot paper calves if the other parent is not registered as more than a half blood, I had forgot about the 3/8 deal.

I will say though, that it's pretty dang hard to find a show type animal that is not papered as a Maine- not as easy to find as one that will go Chi-- but still not very hard.

for other reference- here's the shorthorn upgrading chart-- it's basically identical

I believe for shorthorn plus registration, one of the parents must be registered purebred shorthorn

wrong.. read the link I posted...  The only requirement is ONE parent must be registered atleast 1/2 blood or higher.  Both parent's can be percentages as well.

You can order a certificate from anyone who sells them, atleast I'm certain this is how the Maines do it.    Get on the Maine website- and research the registration process.  basically, you fill out an application- send them an appropriate check- and bam- your calf is papered.

The way I been told is that you have to be a member of the Maine Anjou Association to regester any Maine calf unless you purchase the calf from a member that registers the calf.

----right I looked it up last week and didn't see where it says about the 3/8 x 0. The bull in question is "eye candy" I found him on the Maine site but it says he is 0% Maine.

with such crossed up deals-- why even worry about a paper? The goal of an appendix or upgrading program should be to eventually reach purebred status-- not just continue breeding mutts to mutts and paying the associations to get a piece of paper on a mutt.

Like I said, you'd be able to paper that calf as a Chi-- I would guess.  Everything goes chi.

The next question is why should you be allowed to register that calf- if it's dam is 3/8 Maine- and it's sire is 0%?  Clearly, the maine blood is in such a small amount- it's not going to be expressed- and your calf will not be-- a Maine...  Your 3/8 deal doesn't even have a GRANDPARENT who's a Maine-- so in your eyes-- will an animal who has ONE great- grandparent who's a Maine-- deserve to be registered as a MAINE?

I am not trying to say the resulting calf would "deserve" to have papers, I am just asking if it can be done.

I didn't realize that the rules for showing shorthorn plus and registering shorty plus are different.

Here is what the shorthorn association states about shoring shorthorn plus and that is what I was referring to.

Eligibility for Shows: ShorthornPlus and Durham Red animals are only
eligible to show at designated ShorthornPlus shows and are not eligible for
PACE points. Starting with the 2010/2011 show season, ShorthornPlus and
Durham Red animals are only eligible to show at designated ShorthornPlus
shows and are not eligible for PACE points.  All ShorthornPlus animals must
be 50% Shorthorn blood concentration or higher (7/16 if dam or sire is purebred
15/16) to be eligible for ShorthornPlus shows.

In order to register a Maine or Mainetainer, you have to be a member of the association ($30 for junior and $100 for adult which is 21 yrs. and older) One parent of the calf must be registered with association already and the calf must be at least 25% Maine in order to be registered as a Mainetainer.  Also, you are not required to send in sire certification, like you would with the shorthorn breed. You just put in the sire's registration information, which you can find by doing a "Search the Breed" on their website. Mercedez Benz is a 3/4 Maine so you can register any calves sired by him.

They have a lot of information on their website to answer your questions. If you need/want more info or a better understanding, shoot them an email. They are very good at answering questions and contacting you in a timely manner. (usually within 24 hours)

Eligibility for Shows:

KEY WORDS...  they asked about registering-- not being eligible for shows...

Refer to the chart I provided a link to.  In that according to it- a Shorthorn plus can be as low as 1/4 blood-- and last time I checked-- by no way possible will a purebred parent produce a 25% offspring...

50% shorthorn to show in National Shows and many others.

What about Maintainer... what is the % to show?

That really depends on what you think $30 is worth. But that is just for your membership, calf registration fees aren't included. It was more beneficial to me to register when I was a junior and already have my herd prefix picked out and the program my cattle would be under through the association (ask someone in the association about them. You choose from 2 choices) And I have cattle registered under my name so by the time I was old enough to pay my adult dues, all of my information was there and I had a herd to work on and improve.

If your looking to put more Maine influence in your cattle, I would register them. If I have any heifers that can be registered and I am more than likely gonna keep in the herd, I register them. I have Maines and crossbreds and I use Gucci, I-80, etc. on both so they will increase the percentage of Maine in my herd. I like to be able to have both dam and sire on the registration papers so you can actually read the calf's information. (You get a more correct knowledge of what bloodlines are in your cattle) I have a Thriller heifer out of a Char X cow this year that I will be registering. She's only 25% Maine but when I breed her to Gucci, the calf will have a higher % of Maine in it. If I have any steer calves that can be registered, I will do so at the buyer's request. I won't bother with papering them if the buyer isn't worried/planning on showing them in the Maine classes at shows.

Hope my rambling has helped and hasn't confused you  :)
