Remitall Polled Hereford Dispersal
« on: August 27, 2008, 07:58:52 PM »
The two day dispersal of Remitall's Polled Hereford herd saw 651 lots sell for 2.45 million for an average of $3758. Haven't heard any details yet. The Angus dispersal is Sept 6 and 7 and is also a sale of over 1000 head.

JIT,

Is that the same outfit that produced the shorthorn bull, "Remitall Choice Mint" many years ago?

I hate to see them disperse.  I think they probably have one of the greatest herds of all time.  I wish the Latimer family the best of luck in their endeavors.

JIT, will their Angus sale avg as well as their Hereford or will it do better? I , personally associate their name more with the Herefords ,than with the Angus.

Yes SJ, this is the same family that raised Remitall Choice Mint, along with many other Shorthorns in the 50s and 60s. The name Remitall, comes from L. Latimer spelled backwards. The Shorthorn herd was dispersed in 1968. Louis Latimer is still an active part of the operation, even though he is now in his 80s. About 4 years ago, the Latimers sold their herds of P Herefords and Angus to William Adair, who is a multi millionaire from Mississippi ( I think) . He has now decided to sell the Remitall holdings. I have not heard what the Latimer families are planning but if I were to guess, I would think that Remitall will be back in some form.

Personally, I would think the Angus sale will average less than the Hereford sale, but who knows. They have been in the Polled Hereford business since the mid 60s and have about done everything that can be done in a breed. They have had the Angus for about 20 years and they have collected, and bred some good ones in this breed as well. They also had a Gelbvieh herd of approx 400 - 500 head that was dispersed about 5 or 6 years ago.

If any of you have met Ryan Dorran, he is a grand son of Louis and Jean Latimer. His father is Steve Dorran ( the auctioneer). Ryan will be attending the  Cates and Bowman sales this weekend as well as the Shorthorn Revival sale later in Sept. Ryan has a real interest in Shorthorns and does a lot of work with them here. Personally, I think if Louis Latimer was a little younger, he might get a few Shorthorns again. He has always loved the breed.

Kinda fun for me to see the old time names mentioned once in a while.  I guess I would be most familiar with Remitall Captain Jim from the Remitall Shorthorn herd.  I believe he came to the States not too long after we got started with Shorthorns.  I enjoy looking at the old magazines from the 60's and seeing how many of those families are still in business, there's still a few, especially in Canada.  Seems as though a lot of the herds run their course in 3-5 years anymore.

Always a shame when an icon in the industry disperses.

One of the high selling lots would have been Remital Super Duty 145S selling for 275,000 to an outfit in Canada.
