I have toying with the idea of no longer dehorning calves from 2015, been thinking about it for the last 18 months or so.
What has gone a way in changing my mind is having bought a horned yearling heifer from another breeder about six months ago.
It seems to strip a horn off the bone about every second time I work the group! Knocks them off on the non-return gate and in the neck clamp upon exiting the chute. Drives me mad to see it as she white and it always seems bad!
I think that a quick, once-off cut and burn at a few months is more humane and is altogether better animal welfare practice.
