The going rate in Western Canada seems to be $1/pair per day.
In my area they typically stock about 15 pairs per quarter section (160 acres).
that is poor dirt... roughly 10 acres a pair...
This is Short Grass Ranch Country. It's dry here, 12-14" of precipitation per year and about half of that comes frozen.
Native grasses need to be managed correctly and not overgrazed or the stand will be damaged.
Think of country similar to many parts of the Dakotas, Eastern Montana or Wyoming, similar landscapes except colder.
This is NOTHING like the Midwestern U.S Corn Country and subsequently the cattle have a significantly different phenotype, in many situations cattle will walk well over a mile for water.
Improved pastures, irrigated pastures and tame pastures have differing stocking rates.
Isn't that what a beef cow is for??? To utilise marginal lands, low quality forages and waste products and turn it into a valuable high quality protein source????
