Results of 2014 calf crop

How has everyones spring calving gone? 

We have had some exceptional calves from embryo transfer and natural service.  The bulls we had the most success from in our main cow herd were
Diamond Zulu 3Z extraordinary type, thickness and length with no shortage of style. Most likely the most exciting sire we have ever used. Wish we still had him!
Eionmor Piper 23Z very light birthweights (averaged under 80lbs), that are have bodied down and are growing like weeds. These are very fancy first calves that were very easy on heifers.
Herbourne B Manitoba Gus 13Z is another bull that stamped his calves with thickness and length combined with a lot style. Gus will be seeing the most service this year as we are thrilled with the outcome of this calving season.

I will take more photos when the mud goes down its been a gross year so far (as represnted by the two photos posted). First picture I have attached is of a Herbourne B Manitoba Gus 13Z heifer calf pictured at 30 days, second photo is a Diamond Zulu 3Z pictured at 21 days

That is the bull.  I have attached 3 pictures of him to show his development I REALLY need to photograph him now as a 2 year old as he has never looked better

First picture is at Agribition pictured at 8 months, second photo is when he was 10 months and the final photo is after breeding at 16 months

Here are two ET heifer calves both born April 2 so 19 days old in this photo. They did not want to cooperate! The dark roan is a Mandalong Super Flag out of Diamond Julie Baroness 8J and the light roan is a  Crooked Post Grissom 24T out of Kenlene Secret Maid 6T

Jaimie got a couple of embryos from JIT by Paintearth Rama 53U and out of HC FL Sparkle Delight 2X and got a heifer and a bull calf. I need to get a photo of the bull as he has herdsire stamped all over him . Here is a pic of the heifer. She was born Mar. 8 so is almost 7 weeks in this photo. Her dam is an awesome cow as are both of the grandams.

This is the sire of Herbourne B Manitoba Gus 13Z. His name is Birdtail G Gus 1W. We have purchased him in partnership with Anwender Cattle Co ( hilltop on SP) and we are looking forward to getting calves from him next year. Here is another example of a big framed bull that is as easy fleshing as you can find. He was wintered on hay as he gets too fat if he gets any grain at all.

I am looking forward to seeing pics of your Rama bull calf from Sparkle Delight 1X. I also have two from this flush and they are real studs as well. They are super thick and look like real herd sires.

I am so happy to hear the great reports on the Zulu calves.  I can't wait until September when we get our first ones.  I'm getting itchy to open the gate in a month and turn him out with the cows.

Our calving season was an interesting one. We had a little under 70 cows to calve and ended up with 7 sets of twins! We lost 1 calf out of the 7 sets and some have been fostered on to cows in the neighbourhood. All are doing well. Once again we were blessed with an easy calving season, with very few problems. This is the first year that we have heifers sired by Hatfield Governor calve, and they did not disappoint. Sweet temperment, huge improvement on the udders, and so far, the calves look great. The same goes for the Hatfield Snowman heifers. The bulls were put in with the cows this weekend. We are using a black angus bull, Governor, and his son General. I can't wait until next year to see what General will do. Northern Legend is defenitely putting a stamp on our herd through his sons, and grandsons! It's actually a bit of a shame to be using these bulls on our commercial herd. I'm glad Hatfield uses them on some of his cows too.

Thanks  <beer>, the Zulu calves are some of the best we have ever had. It is possible he may be collected next fall for international use, we are going to be getting semen to use here for next years breeding season. It also looks like we should have a son to use next year even though 66% of his calves have been heifers.
